On the ESEE site it says that it's a bow drill pivot? I'm guessing to aid in fire starting? Anyone have input, pictures, or first hand experience on this divot?

Thanks!

Have you done a search? I believe somebody posted a review a few months back, as I recall it worked well for him. Try finding it, since you're a gold member you can do a search. Or try it out yourself! Good luck.

its actually for rinsing your contact lenses - one at a time.

Just pour some saline in the divot and your are gtg.

Saved my ass last season.

Its also a good powder measure.

I spent an afternoon making a bow drill and experimenting with it when I first got my RC-5.
The divot in the handle makes the knife your bearing block, the anchor point for the top of the drill. I'm guessing the logic behind the divot is that in a survival situation it would be one less component to fabricate before you could start making your fire.

I don't own an RC-5 but I have used other knives with spindle divots. I really like the idea of not having to make a bearing block if I'm down to friction fire as my only option.

Here is a video that Tony did using his. The RC-5 seems to work really well.

does the Rc5 hole stay black (uncleanable?) after use with the bow drill ?

the weight of the rc5 seam perfect to use on top of the drill.. but its not that much longer to carve a little piece of wood to do the same job

If you make the top of the drill fairly pointed and put a dab of chap stick in the divot you won't get the burning. I ended up setting the knife aside and made a bearing block because I wanted a deeper and more secure divot.

Not an RC-5 but I really can't tell much difference on the knife I've been using other than it is a little smoother inside...but that one has black micarta scales....

That guy in the video is a handsome fella eh...
;)

In all seriousness. The RC-5 divot works very well. There is definately a learnng curve to using it, as the balance is kind of akward. However, I have used it dozens of times and am very comfortable with it now.

I'm not quite sure exactly what info you're looking for amroc, but if you have any specific questions I will be happy to answer them to the best of my abilities.

Great video. Thanks for sharing!!!

Thanks everyone! I kept seeing the divot in the handle and I couldn't figure it out, when I went to the website I saw what it was for, but couldn't figure out how it worked. Great idea!
