Would this sharpening system work on the ESEE 5 or is the blade too long? Has anyone got any experience with these two?

The Lanksy doesn't work well on blades even 4" in my experience. The 5 would give you the advantage of having a flat surface to clamp to but you would have to move the sharpener to another position, basically sharpening half the blade at a time, IMO.

Thickness is more of a hang up than length. In my experience the lansky doesn't like to hold on to spines that are more than 3/32" or at most 1/8" thick. I would think sharpening a 1/4" thick blade with one would be a real chore. Going freehand or using a sharpmaker would probably be your best bet.

Ok, thank you so much for the info guys! ill take these things into consideration when buying a sharpening kit.

I just reprofiled my ESSE 5 last night on my Wicked Edge Pro system. I went to a 20* angle which is what they claim to be the "stock" angle. The stock angle was closer to 22.5. It only took about 25 mins on the WE Pro system using the 100 stone. Another 15 mins using the 200 - 400 - 600 stones and the 10u and 14u strops and the edge is hair popping sharp. (I can't wait for the ultra stones to get here)

I do have a GATCO system (for which I do have ultra stones) that I could have used but it would have taken considerably more time.

I used it today to chop some wood and the edge still performed as it had immediately after the sharpening. Great knife and great sharpening system.

SR, Can you post some pix of that edge? I was thinking about buying the WE system...

i'm glad i'm not alone, here. i hear so many people saying that they sharpen knives with 8" blades, on the Lansky. i have nothing against the Lansky. i used one, for YEARS, before getting my EP. however, every time i've tried to sharpen a blade over 4.5", on a Lansky, it has ended poorly.

bite the bullet, buy the EP (or a WE is probably as good), and live happily ever after. there isn't a lot the EP can't do. my 5 loves it, so does my Waki. try THAT with a Lansky :D
