E8E845E9-097C-472A-A539-076C161438CF.jpeg This is a substantial knife. Anytime I pick it up; the weight and the mass are the first things I always notice about it.

If you had to grab one knife and go out the door to never return; would this be the blade you'd grab? Or something else? What would it be?

nice one there before the name change and all. I have a 5 as well.

nope. not that one. too thick to be a good cutter, too heavy too. id probably grab one of my Buck 119s

That seemingly simple question is a tough one. Hefty knives in the 5-6" range are very useful. They carry well, don't get in the way too much and punch above their weight in the field. In that genre' the ESSE 5 (or 6), along with similar models from other brands certainly fills the bill.

Now, that said, if further defining the never returning component, is it a SHTF situation, are you just bugging out and heading to the wild, ala Horace Kephart or engaging with self-induced survival. Will you be going to an urban space, arid, jungle, or ???

A big knife can perform some small knife tasks - albeit not well.
A small knife generally can not perform most big knife tasks at all!
Those is the middle (4 - 6") are very handy and are generally my go-to when rocking a fixed blade afield ... even if I do return.

As for the ESSE 5, very good choice. I like the simple carbon steels as they are forgiving and easy to keep up without specialized sharpening regalia.
