Gave my new ESEE-6 a little face lift: Toned the scales a little darker with some WD-40. The grip/traction are not effected. Found a generic bowie leather sheath that fit it nicely with just a little tweaking. The 2nd pic shows the notch I made in the leather. The 3rd pic shows the approximate blade fit in the sheath.

Looks good. How does the new sheath carry?

It carries just below the waist line, so I have full upper body movement and can lean in any direction without the handle poking me. The leather is thick and stiff, no flapping around when running or jumping. The belt loop is oversized which allows you to tilt the sheath out of the way when seating. It does feel kind of rigid on the thigh and I don't like fussing with the snap.

Does that WD40 smell go away reasonably quickly?

It's been a day and a half and the smell is 99% gone. I like the darker look, but I was also hoping to seal the micarta and that didn't happen with the WD-40. The ESEE micarta soaks water like a sponge and I'm worried that it'll eventually rust the tang. I noticed that the material acts a lot like porous stone, so I'm planning to use a stone sealer next. If you just like the look, the WD-40 is great.

I wouldn't worry about it. The tang is coated like the rest of the knife. I frequently use my ESEEs for food prep and I am constantly washing and soaking them in water. A year down the road, no issues.

My concern is that moisture will get trapped in there for extended periods and end up challenging the coating. You're probably right btw, but sealing the micarta is really easy. You pretty much just soak it with any penetrating sealer, wait 5-10 minutes and wipe off. It doesn't change the grip and has negligible effect on the color.
