for anyone that owns a ESEE 6, do you ever notice your hand slipping off the handle when batoning? i understand its not really designed for this, but i cant seem to keep my hand from sliding off!

The ESEE 6 has great grip. My hand does not slip off the handle when using the knife as a baton.

Ya . . .sorry. I can't picture that. I have an RC-6 and baton all the time. Never slipped yet. We're going to need a bit more detail than that if we're going to help you out. I'm thinking your technique needs work.

+1 on that.

well the handle taperes out towards the end in a king of downward curve, and for some reason when im batoning (specificaly not with another stick, but using the actual knife in a chopping motion) my hand slides down off the handle and i loose it between my forefinger and thumb area.

If you are just using the knife itself, with no baton, then you are not batoning. You are chopping. Hitting a small target like the end of a log, no wonder your hand is slipping. Get yourself a good sturdy baton and go to town. Problem solved. Now if it slips while you are chopping, then you need some sort of lanyard. I'm still having a bit of trouble visualizing this though . . . .

There's a lot of good threads in the Wilderness and Surivial Skills subforum. I would check there and learn some skills and proper technique.

You could read for a loooooong time. I know I do. :)

yeah i mean its more of just an observation. i guess it is chopping lol! haha anyways its obiously not designed for that, i impulsivly want to use it like my junglas!

Hang on to the knife firmly with your weak hand while batonning with your strong hand, and keep the knife horizontal, or handle slightly tilted down.

There is no problem batonning with this knife whatsoever. Improper technique only it seems.

yeah i know how to baton, i was saying batoning, but i was thinking chopping. and i was curiouse if any one else has noticed that its a harder knife to chop one handed with.:' i mean it doesnt have the contour towards the end that say the 3 and 4 have. im not complaining, i mean after all i baught the thing for a reason. it just dawned on my the other day when i felt like it was going to fly out of my hand! haha lanyard time!

Ok , I know what you mean now. I find heavier knives, say Esee 5 or BK2 seem to have less of a problem with that , than lighter knives , at least for me. You have to use more force for a lighter knife because of the lesser mass , and centrifugal force seems to loosen your purchase. A lanyard wrapped around your wrist is a good idea , but keep it tight as you don't want it flinging back towards your hand if it does slip. I myself seldom use lanyards. They seem to get in my way. Try for yourself and see what works best. The Esee 6 is a great bush knife . Congrats on owning one

yes i am proud to own two and a junglas actualy! all three my favorite fixed blades!

I am assuming you mean during chopping...I apologize if this was answered...I only read the first few replies. I have a ESEE 6 and during chopping it will slip off the end for the handle has no way of cradling the butt of your hand during chopping. Many ESEE knives have this handle design and IMHO it needs to be changed. There are a few grip styles you can use with a lanyard that work but honestly I dont trust them. I had a 5 and have a Junglas and a 6...both slip off the handle during vigorous chopping and furthermore require constant re-gripping. Micarta is also not as grippy as other materials. For example the Fallkniven handles are really grippy but they are no where near as durable as micarta!

"It rubs the lotion on its skin..."

Don't do that before chopping.

Also do some chin ups to improve your grip strength (that one is serious).
