ESEE 6 pointless, if you have a 5?

Ok, I am guessing you guys will say "no, get both" and, to be honest, I am the kind of guy that would (waiting for Spyderco to have the Manix 2 XL back in stock because the PM2 and Yojumbo just aren't enough lol) BUT I have this nagging voice, in my head, that the 5 and 6 are too similar to warrant having both. I have an Izula II, a 5, and a Junglas. Would I really see a benefit to the 6? Btw - the ORIGINAL 6 (maybe with some TKC scales) not the CM or the CH, just the ESEE 6.

Opinions?

Isn’t the the 5 just too thick? Just food for thought, have you used the 5 enough to get a feel if it meets your needs? If it does what you ask, then you may not need the 6. Needs and wants are two different things. ;)

Yea that is exactly where I am at. I find myself thinking the 6 will work better, due to the thinner profile. Then I think: (1) I haven't been spending much time in the woods (2) I never remember using the 5, in, the woods, and thinking - I hate this bulky thing.

So..... what I am thinking is - I am gonna make it a point to get as much camping in as I can before winter sets in and see if I notice ANY shortcomings at all. It won't take much, but I gotta have SOME justification lol

sounds like a good plan, that way you can have some evidence and experience with the 5 to help you decide. I have a BK 2, never really tried it, but the weight just carrying it on an outing made me lay it aside, so never really used it, and that feeing stuck with me. I should have used it more often.

I’ve owned multiples of both. In my opinion, the 6 is a far more versatile, useful, and capable tool. It is nimble in hand and will do anything you ask of it.

The 5, to me, is too thick to be good for much. Sure it’s unbreakable and you can slam it through anything, but who cares?

Get a 6 and ditch the 5

The ESEE 5 is nigh indestructible, but I think the ESEE 6 is more versatile with the thinner blade stock and longer length. If you have an Izula and a Junglas, you might not really need the 6 unless you want to do something crazy like carry just one knife. Of course, the ESEE 5 is the go-to if you need to field dress a Buick.

Justification? We don't need no stinking justification!

Seriously, you seem like a thoughtful, sane person. Are you sure you're on the right forum?

2 very different knives imho. Both bring you big fun.

The 6 is longer, lighter and a bit more versatile imho.
Better at cutting, slicing and light chopping
the 5 just put a big big smile on my face every time I use it :D
better at batoning imho

And what's a thread without pics ;)

Their both good. You don't need both. What are your use cases of the knife?

If your just going to leave it indoors and to collect either one will work just fine.

Oh no, no thoughtful sanity here buddy. My car barely runs and I am looking at Harleys. My car has not had AC in almost four years. During that time I've gotten two ATF stamps not to mention a few title 1 weapons as well. I make irresponsible decisions on a regular. I am trying to get better but there's a nagging voice in my head that irresponsible decisions are always more fun :D

Sonofjesse -

As far as uses. Kind of weird. I want a knife for the woods BUT I often carry a fixed blade as an SD tool. It would be nice to have something that worked as both. The 5 is a little hefty. I wouldn't mind something more nimble for when I come out of the woods but don't want to give up any utility in the woods. I guess 8m trying to "one knife" it without giving up much.

Why didn't you say you were hearing voices? You'll fit right in here.
