Obviously the ESEE 6 has been around a while and is very popular. Why is the sheath for the ESEE 6 molded plastic rather than kydex? why does it not have a retention adjustment? Why not a drain hole?

Those are the things I like better about the ESEE 5 sheath. Does the sheath on the 6 hold the knife as well as the 5? Should I be concerned about the material used for the sheath and whether or not there is a drain hole?

The ESEE-6 sheath does have a drain hole. I've never handled a kydex sheath so I can't compare them, but I like the stock one fine.

I have not seen one first hand or held one. I guess I did not see that in the pics.

It has a drain hole and it has perfect fit and function. I havent needed anything better than stock sheath, maybe want one but dont need one. It performs fine exactly the way it was designed. Of course IMHO....

hi, as the other guys said the 6 sheath does have a drain hole, its just molded in and dosnt show like the kydex sheaths do. the retention is very good on the 6 and 3 sheaths and stays tight i've used mine for a couple of years in good weather and bad with no problems at all.

the molded plastic was chosen for the 6 and 3 because the military prefers it over the kydex because its more stable in extreme temps. its also a ton more expensive to set up the molds than it is for kydex.

I have a Shotgunner kydex sheath that I like but lately I've been thinking about buying a factory molded sheath to try out. I don't know why, just been wanting to try one. Might find someone to trade with even if I get a wild hair.

The 6 sheath does have a molded drain hole and the retention is good in them as well.

cricket, I've got a "6" that will be mailed out tomorrow from Howe's Knife Shop as an "early" Christmas gift. I am "assuming" that there really isn't a whole lot of difference between these sheaths ??? This "6" will be thrown into our camping equipment & will be used primarily around the site.
Thanks for letting us know my man, can't wait for Tuesday . .
Be safe.
p.s.: Fingers still on the mend ???

hi, yeah the sheaths are all the same...very very good. now for me i added the molle back and pouch because they make the sheath the best i've ever used.

fingers are alot better, one will always be numb but what can you do, at least i can bend the darn thing now.

I've got four different plastic sheaths for my 6's, and about 5 for my 3's, in various setups. I don't play nice with them, I bump into stuff, get smacked by trees, (fall on rocks like an ass), go out in sub-zero temps, and on hot humid days. They preform well. I like 'em.

As for retention...if you look close you can see the plastic has larger nubs than most kydex setups, and it flexes and returns better as well. I'm sure it'll eventually wear out and need to be replaced, but my first one has seen a little over a year of good use, and still clicks in solid.

That's something I've always wondered about.

The sheath for my 6 is awesome, the blade clicks in solid and there is a thumb ramp to puts the sheath off... Perfect form and function.
