hey guys,

Quick question about the Ah-1 arrowhead.

Is it to small to get a solid grab of the tiny blade? I ask because I've used sharp pieces of flint/obsidian in the past to gut fish while outdoors. I could carry them in my pocket, and use them to cut string, gut trout, and random small tasks.

I'm thinking of picking up the ah1 and a kydex sheath. So with the sheath plus arrowhead were talking about $27 total. Could get a cheap knife, hell even a mora for that much. But it's not as small or nearly as cool :D:thumbup:

I wanted to know if the little arrowhead is to small to get a good thumb forefinger type grip.

Thanks,
-Richard.

While I believe it would work for the purpose you are speaking of, I think a small pocket knife would be the way to go. I think the AH-1 is a great addition to a survival tin. It can be lashed to various sized sticks to make a utility blade, spear, arrow, trap component. They are very cool but I would not rely on it as a utility blade so to speak. I have used to cut sting in the manner you mention above, holding the arrowhead like this leaves your fingers quite close to the blade and points, could be asking for trouble.

I had the same question as you. So I ordered the AH1 to try but have not been very successful.

The AH1 is not a blade made for cutting. If you do nothing else this will work, it's better than nothing.

I finally chose a tiny Tool logic blade. I made a small Kydex sheath and I will put this small blade in my Altoids kit ( on my ESEE6 :D )

Well I have carryied it as a neck knife but I find it's better and more useful in a combo setup.

No other opinions on this little thing?:(

I would like to find a use for it (like I mentioned.) But to me an arrow/gig is not something I worry about when out in the wilderness. I just wanted something super small and sharp for fish gutting and super small tasks. Folder's can get messed up. (dropping in the sand, water, etc.) but this just seemed simple, and, well sharp.

I think I might just wait until esee releases the next size up in this line up of 'arrowhead's."

To be honest it doesn't make a good cutting edge. It's edge symmetry is designed to poke or penetrate-- not slice and cut like a knife would. It will cut if you really need it too but a very small knife with a thinner edge design would probably be a better choice for a survival tin knife.

I think that with your desired list of tasks, the ah1 is not the best choice. I think tops knives makes a very small chisel point blade that has a finger hole grip. It could be used as a make shift spear as well in a survival situation.

Best,

You can definitely get a decent enough purchase on it, and it cuts surprisingly well for how wide the edge angle is. I just got mine today and have been thoroughly pleased.
