Why not? If built as good as the rest of the ESEE knives, I would EDC one. What do you guys think?

YESSS! i was thinking the same thing, but was afraid of being shunned for extreme thinking

well it would be even more expensive than a manual knife, there are federal restrictions against them, and they wouldnt carry the warranty. i would just be happy ESEE is making a manual folder, let alone an auto.

i believe those are state restrictions, because some states do allow autos. (knives, not vehicles)

and while i've had some former cops tell me that "most cops don't seem to care", i've seen guys on other forums report that some cop confiscated their assisted opening knife, claiming it was a "switchblade".

i'd rather see a flipper, or assisted opening knife than an auto. but i've also heard of the springs or tension bars on some assisted opening, or auto knived getting weak over time, which would cause warranty issues, or service issues.

both federal and state laws exist

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switchblade#United_States

The Switchblade Act, (Pub.L. 85-623, 72 Stat. 562, enacted on August 12, 1958, and codified in 15 U.S.C. § 1241–1245), prohibits possession on Federal lands, Indian reservations, military bases, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and other protectorates. It prohibits manufacture and sale of switchblades in interstate commerce.[15] The act was amended in 1986 to also restrict ballistic knives. Federal law controls Federal aspects only, and does not mandate prohibition within an individual state. It does say specified knives can not be mailed through the U.S.Postal Service, and provides penalty exceptions for other common carriers/shipping companies doing normal business.[15]
18 U.S.C. § 1716(g)(2) provides this summary:
Federal law prohibits shipment of automatic knives across state lines, with the following exceptions: Switchblade knives can be shipped: (1) to civilian or Armed Forces supply or procurement officers and employees of the Federal Government ordering, procuring, or purchasing such knives in connection with the activities of the Federal Government; (2) to supply or procurement officers of the National Guard, the Air National guard, or militia of a state, territory or the District of Columbia ordering, procuring, or purchasing such knives in the connection with the activities of such organization; (3) to supply or procurement officers or employees of the municipal government of the District of Columbia or the government of any State or Territory, or any county, city or other political subdivision of a State or Territory; procuring or purchasing such knives in connection with the activities of such government. (4) to manufacturers of such knives or bona fide dealers therein in connection with any shipment made pursuant of an order from any person designated in paragraphs (1), (2), and (3).

We're doing our best to just come out with a "regular" folder right now :) We will have some samples at SHOT of the ESEE-3 folder and we will go slowly and carefully from there and see how this works. Just want to beat the hell outta the protos before committing to production. Plus we need to see how well balanced it is since a lot of people will probably be using them as throwing knives.

Holy CRAP! You just gave me a great idea!

How about a sliding weight on the non locking side of the folder so you can balance it to your liking for throwing!?

LMAO! Jeff, just make some throwing knives, you know everyone would buy them! Maybe call it the ESEE-T

I traded a bottle of whiskey for a NICE Benchmade auto a few years back. It was fun to play with, but in reality I'd never carry it (even if it was legal).

And the more parts there are on something, the more areas dirt and other crap can get into a screw it up. You can't exactly run an auto knife under a hose to clean it.

But I have found that autos make excellent throwing knives
