This is what I've been using this year, a Eagle Patrol Pack with two Eagle canteen pouches attached to the sides.

I had a tarp, a poncho, paracord, fire kit (Maxpedition Cocoon with various firestarting items), canteen, metal cup, a Clif Bar and some regular granola bars, pumpkin seeds, SAK 111mm Hunter, leather gloves, small flashlight, first aid kit, monocular, small "survival" kit with fishing line, water tabs, etc...and probably more odds and ends.

I carried my Osprey Kestrel 38, and used a Tarp,mosquito netting,sleep pad,2ea. Nalgene water bottles,Snow peak cookset,Ti spork,katadyn vario,mountain house food,change of clothes,lite machete,ESEE3MILCP,ESEE firekit,SAK Rucksack,FAK,PSK,SFG2LED,Inova bolt,Petzyl Tikka2 and fishing gear everything contained in pack.few other odds & ends as well

Lots of good suggestions so far. I also carry something to read and some paracord to to work on projects. If you carry bushcraft reading related material, you can practice as you go. My last outing I harvested everything I need to try a fire bow:thumbup:

hey, i carried a camelbak, with junglas, canteen and cup, multitool, medpouch, and map pouch on the molle straps. inside, mre, nutrigrain bars, t shirt and one pair of socks, inflatable pillow, paracord, headlamp, gi hammock, and pistol.

I'd like to see how you pack your Redwing and with what. I have a new Redwing 3100 I just picked up a few weeks ago, still has the tags on it. Can't wait to get to use it.

I found myself wanting to test the limits of just how little resources could "get me by" in shorter backpacking trips. I paid for it each time and I learned a lot from it. And for some odd reason I keep doing it ;)

To answer your question I always had a knife, radio and medkit.

Well that's a great way to learn. I am the opposite I would always take to much cause I would want all the toys.

This. I want to carry a pack the size of the Redwing, but I want to have 120L of stuff in like Yostemite Sam's pack mule. :D

Haha! So true. It's tough to leave out some things that you either want to try out that hasn't made a trip yet.

Redwing is a great start. It really depends on the terrain and what you plan to do. I tie a shemagh to my shoulder strap so it's easy to access. You can mount a machete and an axe to your compression straps so as they're both accessable over-the-shoulder-it's how I mount them on my Maverick and it works great. Stick a can of soup in one side pocket, an aquamira or ketadyn filter water bottle in the other, wniter hat, work gloves, pullover, altoids tin fire kit FAK, fishing kit and repair kit (duct tape, needles thread for repairing tent and clothing) 550 chord, headlamp/penlight, spare boxers and tee shirt for each day you're on the trail, then of course a good beater and a good slicer as far as cutlery goes :D

I take pack, 8x10 tarp, eno doublenest hammock, camelbak, rope for hammock/tarp/extra, wp matches/firesteel/dryer lint, two fenix 1 cell flashlights + 4 batteries also can be use for gps, garmin gpsmap 60csx and paper maps if I've never been there before, titanium spork, camping cup for boiling water, blanket/sleeping bag depending on weather, underwear/socks for as many days as gone, extra shirt and pants, whatever food im in the mood for, and of course as many knives as I can see having a use for. No particular order of importance, just how I saw it in my pack. I just got a head lamp too, that will prob get thrown in there. almost forgot, 1 pack of camels for each day plus one pack, plus bic lighter with cigarettes in my pocket. also if its a short hike in just to camp maybe a wee bit of crown royal. pack is either rei 40ish liter, or if its warm enough for no sleeping bag I have a regular old backpack with no waist strap which I prefer being as how my large gut gets in the way of waist straps. ;)
