I just got my first ESEE Fire Kit from TKC the other day. Before packing it with the rest of my gear, I was curious what types of tinder (or other stuff) y'all find work/fit best in the waterproof handle.

Thanks as always.

Congrats on the firestarter! I have heard that cotton balls are great to stuff inside of there. Just push as many in there as you can, they make great flammable dry tender!

Cottonballs were my initial thought, well cottonballs in PJ, but is there a method to cover the PJ CBs so as to not have irremovable PJ lining the tube forever, or am I worrying about nothing?

Worrying about nothing. Do the PJ cotton balls, shove them in there, screw the cap on. You can clean the PJ out of there with hot water and a paper towel, or if you really want to scrub it, a degreaser. I'd definitely rather have good tinder in there than worry about a little PJ to deal with. Plus if your lips get wind burnt/chapped, you have the PJ to grease your lip meat with! :D Multupurpose man.

lip meat eh, there was a History program on the other day when the captain and one sailor ate 6 other guys, narrator never mentioned lip meat though.....

:)

thats honestly a personal preference. If it bothers you to have the pj inside there forever maybe dont coat them? If it doesnt bother you then go ahead and do it. I honestly dont see what harm it could cause. Those tubes seal very well and I dont think the pj will cause any rusting or anything like that in there.
Also nothing is forever...with enough elbow grease you could get it all cleaned out ;)

Good luck!

I like the AMK Tinder , works fantastic ! alot of places carry them as well.
Tinder-Quik is waterproof and burns for 2-3 minutes, giving you plenty of time to light a fire.

No messy PJ inside the capsule... just my opinion,

you can see them in the top left corner of this last kit I built up

The ESEE Firekit will hold 3-4 of them....

Don’t say that around here, we have some resident psychos and sociopaths in training that might get some ideas. :D

There are other tinders that would also work fine, but it’s just a preference thing. For the size, weight and cost, PJ cotton balls are pretty much my go-to. Waxed jute twine would work but along the lines of what you were saying, I don’t like getting wax all over everything. It flakes off and gets on everything. You could also do fatwood shavings or a combo of any of these, but it’s a little harder to light under some conditions.

They look like big fat wicks!! :D
thanks for the idea Tony, I think I like that one better.
or maybe keel a couple of both in there?

I am a big fan of these as well. Water resistant, cheap, pack nicely, and they work well.

I use PJCBs - I microwave them to melt the PJ into the CB, and they work so well I would never think of buying any tinder. I like the way you can rip off a tiny amount if that's all you need, or use a whole ball if conditions are really bad.

well now, you learn something new everyday. i never use fabric softner so i'v never had that problem

i guess the key to anything is test the crap out of it before you leave the house

i've soaked some cotton balls in some hand sanitizer and put them in some little individual plastic bags, they work pretty good and stay lit for a bit..they were a pain in the ass pulling apart when they were soaked tho..

actually they werent cotton balls they were those cotton rolls dentists use..those little bastards are hard to pull apart.

Has anyone put magnesium shavings in the cotton balls and then soaked them with PJ?

I might try that this weekend.

Has anyone tried twisting and stuffing PJ soaked cotton balls into cut down straws and then seal the ends? A friend of mine showed me the contents of his altoids tin fire kit and he had a couple in it. I've been meaning to ask him how he sealed them. All you do to start one up is slice the straw length wise- peel it open and strike it. It was a neat idea and I would venture a guess that you could cut a couple of pieces of straw to length to fit in the fire kit. I was actually planning on trying it this weekend.
