ESEE Fire Starter

I recently picked up an ESEE fire starter. My (limited) previous experience with these sort of things was confined to a tool that had 2 components -- part was magnesium that you shaved off and the other part was used to ignite the shavings. The ESEE tool seems to serve both purposes with the same rod.

Can someone 'splain me what's the difference/benefit for using one over the other?

Magnesium is intended to use in difficult circumstances when you're in damp or otherwise challenging climate or situation. Magnesium burnes easily and really hot, over 3000 Celsius.

Esee is using earth metal (can't remember which one) unlike most combination fire starters. So Esee product doesn't quite strike spark but rather small super hot balls of metal shavings making it easier to get fire started as sparks get cooled really fast and molten metal shavings from Esee has longer burning time.

the big benefit for me is one motion to scrape & spark versus scraping the magnesium block & praying the wind doesn't scatter the shavings, then trying to spark into the mess.
Yes, I do still carry around a magnesium block, because it's lighter, but I prefer the ESEE fire kit in my BoB.

I think they've changed it recently to a "standard" ferro rod.

That would suck but considering problematic situation with earth metals, it makes sense

Is the "problematic situation" the non-renewable status of such metals or any other of the myriad ecological problems associated with mining? This is a sincere question; I'm not trying to be a jerk-off or make a point.

And the fact mischmetal is composition some of the most rare earth metals on the world... And China provides 95% of worlds earth metals which is sorely needed for IT industry aswell.
