After reading over this forum, and looking over many.... MANY knives I'm just about to pull the trigger on a ESEE III with the custom scales from TKC.

This sub forum has been great in my search BTW so..... thanks.

I do a lot of U.L. backpacking here in the PNW. Mostly in the N. Cascades, as well as the Selkirks in N. Idaho. I have done just fine for 16 years with a Vic Pioneer, Bahco Lapplander saw, and when by myself, a Bahco hatchet.

I have wanted a light weight, sub 4" fixed blade for some time, and the III is it. Carbon steel, great scale material, and according to all that seem to own them, proven track record. Not to mention the first rate company the makes/warrants them.

My question is this. Do any of you recommend using epoxy to glue the scales down? I don't THINK it's necessary, but thought I might ask. :o

I wouldn't worry about epoxy or anything like that. They should stay put just fine on their own.

PS: Nice to see more ESEE enthusiasts in the PNW. :)

If you want to do something, you could get some Loc-Tite and add a drop into each side of each screw and then tighten it up. That should lock them down pretty hard.

Congrats on the 3, I think you'll really like it. Very good knife.

I wouldn't worry about glueing anything unless you want to put a drop of locktite on the screws, but I don't even feel that is necessary. Check them every once in a while and you'll be good to go.

Thanks........ Thats what I thought really. Just wanted a second opinion.

TKC is a great company to deal with. Highly recommended by alot of us here on the forum. Dale and crew have great customer service and they ship pretty quick. The 3 is a great all around pack knife. All of the ESEE knives are, you can't go wrong with any of them.

Thats what I have been reading. I'm really looking forward to the ESEE III. Great size, thin, and made from a good all around steel IMHO. I'm not much on large knives myself. I use a axe, hatchet, or machete when the need arises.

Also, I found one of many guys here that makes a good looking kydex sheath for it that can be carried horizontally. Thinking about going that direction. TKC is out of the ESEE III right now, but I was leaning twords kydex anyway.

Once I buy it, and have a chance to put it to use..... I'll post pics lest I be pulverized by a Junglas wielding ESEE fan. ;)

The Knife Connection is who you're talking about right? What blade and scales are you looking for? Looks like Dale has pleanty in stock accourding to quantitiy available numbers for ESEE 3 blades and scales

I agree, it looks like Dale is loaded with 3 inventory from what I can see. He has all blade and handle color combos available.

I'm sorry. I wasn't very clear. Not the knife itself. I was referring to the sheath for the III. He has plenty of ESEE III's as well as scales in stock. He is just out of the sheath w/ the boot clip. I was leading too a kydex version anyway.

I got my 3 for the same reason, it's an awesome backpacking knife!
And definitely good job getting the custom scales from TKC, they really turn a great knife into an outstanding one!

Don't discount the canvas micarta scales - I have a 3-mil, and the scales are great. Grippier when wet, actually. Great choice of a 3, in any case.

Unless you are planning to baton alot with the 3 I wouldn't worry about glueing the scales. I had to epoxy the scales down on my junglas after a recent camping trip but I battoned with it for three and a half days heavily. They started to shift slightly but it wasn't a big deal, I just didn't want it to do that again. Just my experience, but I can't see that being an issue with a three.

Not much. If I do at all it will be to bring 1"-2" rounds into starter size pieces for a young fire. Other than that it will be used as a 3-1/2 " knife normally is....... to gut zombies after the be-heading. ;)

Unfortunately the 3 is only available with the molded plastic sheath. I've grown to appreciate the plastic sheath in my time carrying it.
