Hello, I've been looking for a good but affordable outdoor knife. I've looked at the ESEE Izula but would like something a little bit smaller and cheaper, but also folding. Any suggestions?

I personally don't know any folders with the izula blade, but have you checked out the Esee folders?

Any preference on lock type?

The DPx HEST/F is as close as you'll get right now until ESEE finishes the Izula folder hopefully next year. The HEST/F is closer to a ESEE-3 in size and blade profile, so bigger than an Izula, but like I said, it's about as close as you can get right now.

Look at the Cold Steel Mini Recon 1 and if you want something even smaller, look at the Micro Recon. That Triad Lock will take a beating.

I stepped in to post about the HEST. I see LC already did. It was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the question.

It has good belly for its size if that's what you're looking for. They also make a fixed line with the same blade. Try the HEST Heat if you want something smaller.

+1

The HEST/F is a great folder too...I have a couple of them and have been pretty impressed. I stay away from the older versions that require the tool to adjust the pivot (they are easy to spot - they have four extra holes in the pivot screw) and have had good luck with them.

The HEST/F is one of the shortest knives I feel comfortable using...normally 3.25-3.5" is a minimum blade length for me due to comfort issues, but the HEST/F is awesome. The blade is deceptively short because of the shape, and the handle has a nice shape to it too.

EDIT: I just realized you said cheaper than the Izula. Your best bet is to look at the cheap folders they're putting the ESEE brand on. They're not bad.

For a dedicated outdoor knife, no folder is gonna be as good as a fixed blade.
Even smaller than an Izula ? What are you going to do with the knife ? For outdoor tasks, I would prefer at least a 3" blade. Better 4.5"

If it really has to be a folder, buy a Zancudo otherwise get a good fixed blade like the ESEE3/4 or DPX HEST

Mora clipper or companion. Done.

ETA, didn't see the folding part.
