Just looking for input on whether it's a bad idea to take a non-stainless knife like my new Izula neck-knife on a river-running trip. I've read of guys running the edge through a candle, etc. to try to provide some rust protection, but what do any of you other boater/kayakers think? Should I just look for another knife of some sort in stainless? :) Also, if I took it along and ended up with some light rust on it and then removed the rust upon returning home by honing, will this cause damage or pitting if it was repeated over a period of time? Thanks.

If the coating is still intact, just wipe down the blade at the end of the day and you should be just fine.

if it's a user and not a collector for you....then it's a good idea to bring it. use a product like marine tuf-cloth prior on the edge, and logos, etc. and at the end of each day.

i carry mine in the swamps, which includes canoeing in the feeder rivers and wading waist deep, etc...... often, with tuf-cloth treated, never had a rust issue. stainless blades(not counting h1), with out some sort of treatment i get rust spots....so.....

I've taken mine canoeing and fishing quite a bit before. It's really not an issue, just wipe and protect everything when possible.
