I want to get a Junglas, and either a ESEE 5 or 6. Which do you think is the best combination?

I vote for the Junglas and 6! The 5 is an awesome knife but very thick! The Junglas can handle just about all you can throw at it so I would want the 6 for the lighter work! Just my 2 cents. Shoot me a PM if you need any kind of comparison photos to help!

I feel like the 5 and 6 fit the category of "one knife to do everything," and would be kind of like doubling up if you pair them with the Junglas. The ESEE 3, 4, or even Izula would complement the Junglas very well and cover all your bases much better. If you are set on either the 5 or 6 though, I would get the 6, just because the 5 is so chunky and less of a slicer.

A Junglas and a 3 or 4 might be a better combo, true. I have had the 5, I have a 4, 6, and Junglas. Guess which ones go with me camping? 6 and Junglas, plus a folder. The 5 got sold. Loved it but never used it because of how heavy and thick it was. Further, the 6 is not that different than the 4, just sort of super sized. It has a nice choil so you can choke up on it for detail work. The 5 and 6 seemed like totally different worlds to me.

So about a month ago I finally gave myself a Junglas! I had one many years ago but gave it to a friend who was going through a rough time. I missed the Junglas but tried to be practical about getting another one because of the limited time I ever got to use it. Well now I have another one and it just makes me smile. For some strange reason it reminded me of the old Peppermint Pattie commercials. They would say "when I bite into a Peppermint Pattie, I feel like I am on top of a mountain getting ready to ski for gold" Stuff like that!

Every time I put the Junglas in my hand I feel like I am ready to just tear some stuff up. I feel like I could build a house with it, destroy a car with it, chop down redwoods, kill a flock of zombies, take on a pack of wild sheep, conquer Rome, end all the unjustices in the world and bring world peace!

This is why I say if you want to take a Junglas hiking/camping TAKE IT!

Count me in for a Junglas and a 6-Infact, my go bag has a Junglas and a 6 molle'd to it. The 6 is molle attached to my left shoulder strap upside down, and the junglas is molle attached to the side of the pack-upside down. Both can be easily drawn with my right hand while wearing the pack.

Both work well together too.

Esse 6 would be more useful than the 5. An Esse 4 and a 6 are a nice combo.

As others have stated, I think the 5 and 6 are knives that try to be a "one knife to rule them all" kind of thing - a philosophy which personally makes no sense to me - except that they are definitely "survival knives" - meant for an undesirable scenario in which you don't have a full kit of goodies to make life easier...just one knife. Given more realistic scenarios like camping, if you are investing in a wood processing beast like the Junglas, the 4 is all you need to handle the remaining camp chores, and in fact, the 3 would probably suffice as well. Matter of preference...but to me a 5 or 6 WITH a Junglas is crazy. Way to much unnecessary weight, without the finesse aspect within those combos that a smaller, nimbler blade like the 3 or 4 would bring. YMMV.

Thanks everyone. I would be getting the junlgas for chopping mainly, taking it backpacking and camping etc.

Maybe a better question would be whats the best ESEE to start with? I have a Spyderco Mule, so Id like a bigger fixed blade to start with the esee 4 probably...

My advice: get them all.

Haha! Eventually. I like the 4, but I think I want bigger. I have good folders that I feel could do most of what the 4 could.

I think I am leaning towards getting the 6 and going from there. And hey, I buy knives for the use and to collect. So it cant hurt to eventually have one of each? :)

I love the 6. I don't have a 5, but a chopper/6 combo is pretty great. Throw in a folder, and you're set.

P.S. Get the TheKnifeConnection G10 scales. They are very comfy and they look great.

Thanks everyone. Since I have a few nice folders that I think could do the job for any smaller tasks, I think I am going to start with the 6. While the 5 is awesome and I'll get one eventually it is almost too much for now I think. Since I will get the Junglas later most likely, is the 6 pretty effective to use batoning?

Pulled the trigger on the 6! Think I got a good deal. I'm currently training to go backpacking in the Sierras, and this will be a great companion I think.
