Esee Knives???

Very interesting...What's the long story? I'll get some popcorn!!!
I dont remember all the details or it being real nasty or bad per say.....if you read the posts in the archives you'll see more details about it from that time. my memory was they wanted to have their own forum on their own website. I dont remember exactly what, why etc.

I'll let others who remember it better lay it out for you.

Here is the response from Jeff. I will link the source for the Bladeforums thread that was talking about this topic. The quote comes from a link that is in the thread to a post on ESEE's website, but the page no longer functions for me.

I'm basically tried of the mega forums that seem to draw a lot of argument, debate and people wearing their heart on their sleeves. There will be none of that here as this forum becomes active and builds membership. We are not looking to be the largest forum on the block. We simply desire to have a "campfire" setting with a few serious people that actually get out and use their gear, whether in a work capacity or for pleasure. The forums are open to discussion on all types of gear, equipment and knives, regardless of the manufacturer. We simply ask that your posts be from experiences and use.

Fair enough! Thanks for the answers guys! I'm still going to buy a couple but I like to see what people think on here. YouTube can't always be trusted.

I like them :-). I have a handful. Of course it depends on your use case. Based on my experience I don't recall objecting to anything I've seen on YT. Basically, they are great 'user/beater' knives backed by a superb warranty. You won't find anything fancy in them. They are made to be used and used hard. And, when you have a problem with one, contact ESEE to get it resolved. They will take care of it. My one suggestion is to get/upgrade to the 3D handles.

I have several different models and they are great knives to use and a good value. They seem to be designed as a practical user type, not specifically as a work of art ,although they are well made with an excellent warranty. Being more of a practical user than a collector has led to me owning six Esee's.
The people that run it seem to be good to deal with too. Unfortunately, one of the owners/founders recently passed away (Mike Perrin).
I don't know what if any drama led to them not being a prominent participant here, well before my time here, but there are occasional threads on BF discussing them.

I can't remember hearing much negative about their stuff, other than gripes about their blade coatings (the people who don't like it generally remove it). I've got an Izula, and it's a tough little knife.

More than anything, they're a company that will stand behind their stuff. Their warranty is the best in the industry. Replaced some knives for a guy who lost his home and everything in it to one of the California wildfires.

If I remember correctly, RYP got into some forum drama and was loosely associated w/ them at the time, having his original HEST manufactured by Rowen and sold through ESEE/RAT. This was right around the time he was getting his own thing going. Might even have been kicked, can't recall.
Jeff and Mike, being the kind of guys they are, left and built their own hangout rather than have anything to do w/ it.
To their credit, I don't remember them saying a bad word about anyone involved, or BF. The closest they got was saying that Pelton's opinions were his own and he didn't speak for them.

Those guys produce a fantastic bit of kit, and stand behind what they sell. Mike will be sorely missed.

The HM version does not have choil.

I've had only three ESEEs: 3, 4HM, and 6, all 1095 with black coating. Gifted the 4HM to a friend so I never had a chance using it. I agree the coating can be worn off relatively easily, as compared to, say, DLC. But I treat them as inexpensive users so that is not an issue. Edge retension is just so so but it's 1095 what can you expect. The flip side is they are very tough and I have no need to worry about edge chipping. All in all, they are good working knives given the cost.

Nice! I'm leaning toward the Esee 5. I don't have any knives in carbon steel. When I was teenager I bought a BIG carbon steel knife and the thing rusted and pitted the first month I had it. I take better care of stuff now LOL!
The 5 is a knife that wiil bring a smile to your face for sure.

Visit this thread to see some nice Esee's
Here's my 5 as this thread needs some more pics too :D
