I have an ESEE 4 with micarta scales on it. The scales are too smooth and I would like to either rough them up or cut shallow grooves in them for added grip (almost like checkering). I do not have access to a sand blaster, so can I just sand them with course grip sand paper, such as 80 or so? Is it possible to do this without delaminating them?

I did that with my Buck 102 woodsman. It had the polished black micarta that Buck puts on all their old line sheath knives. I took some course sandpaper like 100 or so, and just pushed it around in a random pattern of criss cross and swirl. Made it a hundred percent better under wet conditions or with fish slime on my hands. The knife is my small game and fish knife, so I needed a non slip grip. Sandpaper roughed up micarta is a very good grippy material when sanded.
