I am going to be receiving an Esee Junglas in a few days and have been reading posts about them. I've seen some great photos of knives that have been stripped and patina'd. I'd like to see more so that I can get some ideas. Has anyone done a partial strip and left some of the powdercoating ? I think it could look kind cool with 1/2 the blade powdercoated and 1/2 stripped and patina'd along the cutting edge. I'm also intrigued by the idea of just smoothing the powdercoating with sandpaper rather than removing it completely. I'd love to see some photos of a knife like that.

I'm just gathering ideas though so the more photos of blade mods that I can see the better. Thanks! I really appreciate anyone's taking the time to help!

I am not terribly pleased with the way it turned out, I have been considering polishing it up and forcing a patina with a potato or cucumber. I used mustard and vinegar this go round.

You gotta polish it some. The surface has had some sort of chemical treatment to make the coating adhere. This is an ESEE-5

I just sanded. I probably shouldn't have said polish. I just wet sanded with I forget what grits. I just got a package of wet dry black sandpaper from the auto parts store that had one sheet each of (I think) 220, 440, 800, 1000 and went with that. I have resisted the urge to force a patina. A natural patina would/will look great on this thing but I am not a huge fan of the forced patina all the while being able to appreciate the results some people get.

It's an outstanding result regardless...

maprick, here is a link to a ratmandu that i stripped the coatings off the bevels while leaving the flats coated. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=819486

send me an email and i'll send you some shots of a tops steel eagle that i did for a member. he wanted the entire knife stripped and the main bevels ground thinner but i left the flats coated while i was thinning the blade down just to see what it looked like. i wish he would have let me leave the flats coated since it looked good.

That does look REALLY cool.... I'm very undecided on what to do at this point. The knife looks so cool right now - I don't mind the black coating at all. Have no idea how it's going to stand up to some abuse this weekend. I really like the idea of leaving some of the blade coated and having just 1/4 or 1/3 of the blade stripped and not in a straight line but in kind of a random wavy blend from powdercoat to smooth coat to thinner coat to bare metal. I don't know, it might look dumb too.....
