Gotta admit I like an uncoated blade. Since my BK7, BK14, and Izzy II all have coated blades (helps to protect the high carbon steel against from corrosion, I know) I decided to order an RC-3 with what appears to be an uncoated blade. The description on new graham website doesn't say anything about whether the blade has any coating of any kind or not, but the photo appears to show an uncoated blade. (Or it could have a clear coating of some sort, I suppose).

I think the uncoated RC-3 looks awesome and I'm not worried about rust, as I can maintain the carbon steel no problem.

Anyone else here have the uncoated blade? Do you like it? Does it slice a little smoother/better than the coated blades?

I know lots of people strip the coating off of ESEEs but if you are buying a new one chances are the blade is desert tan. The color is pretty light and in some photos is could pass as not having a coating on it.

mistrust... thanks for your reply; you are right... now I feel really! dumb. I thought the description of desert tan applied to the sheath.... now I see that the knife is desert tan, though in the picture, it looks like plain steel. Dang. :( How embarassing!

Oh well... I may just remove the finish on the knife... so I guess my question can still apply... do the knives slice better without a coating on them?

Yes. I stripped the coating on mine and slicing performance improved by a noticeable degree.

I stripped my Izula only on the blade, I left the coating on the handle for the simple fact that I wrapped it with leather and would be able to oil it. I love it, but it is a process, someone had posted the step by step instructions anwhile back.

What methods are the best to strip the coating... any suggestions on this?

Spray it with paint stripper then wrap it in plastic. Wait overnight and the coating will slough off.
