:D:DI am getting the 5 very soon.... Or so I anticipate it as a gift for Christmas from my wife. :D:D
First off, this is going to be my new primary outdoor heavy use knife. I know it is the Jack of all trades / Master of none.

On that note... Has any one watched the Youtube Channel Virtuovice? He takes a RC-5 and puts what looks to be a fantastic edge on it, much improving the blades cutting abilities from his testing.

I would like you to watch the video, and tell me if this is a pointless modification to the blade, will it put a hurt on a purpose built edge geometry, or is it a good "time worthy" modification.

What are your thoughts on what this guy has done to his blade?

As always, it's going to depend on your intended use for the blade.

For me, that's just not the intent of the knife. It's a brute to me, batoning, chopping and general beating.

If you are looking for your blade to be a carver, or a game processing tool, then it's a nice mod.

I'm kind of with shotgunner. I would pass on doing that personally. The saber grind is just fine for the intended application of this knife.

I like virtuovice's videos, but what he did to his ESEE-5 is probably unnecessary for most of us. Both of my 5's came razor sharp and will shave the hair off your arm easily. After some light sharpening, they're what I would call irresponsibly sharp.

Like I said, I like his vids, but in watching them for quite some time now, he seems to be too focused on sharpness...somewhat obsessively so. His expectations for some knives are just too high. Virtuovice has some good vids, but he's a novice like most of us and is still learning by trial and error and admits that himself. For what he expects out of some knives though, he needs to be spending far more than he does. Again, his expectations at times are just too high and I think that's him just not understanding the limitations of certain steel and certain designs.

His vids on the ESEE-5 are a nice point of reference and nothing more. Get an ESEE-5 for yourself and I assure you, you'll find it plenty sharp when it arrives.

Personally, I put a full convex edge on all of my knives. I can get all of them hair popping, paper slicing sharp as per the video however that's not why I put the convex on my knives. I do it because it's so easy to touch up the edge in the field if I need to. I have an Altoids can full of sand paper, pieces of green and black and two pieces of leather glued to the top and bottom. I also believe that a true convex edge keeps its edge longer as there is more steel behind the grind.

Just my opinion.

Hahah, I like that. Sums up most of my knives now. I don't like handing them to most people without a huge disclaimer first. Sharp beyond any normal person's perception of sharp....yet still not as sharp as some people here can get ...yet.

One disclaimer for it would be that Wako/virtuovice really sucked at sharpening regular v-edge/second bevels at the time. He did always admit as much and you notice his freshly Sharpmaker sharpened BK2 could hardly go through a piece of paper.

Whether a convex edge is better or not for you should definitely be decided off of other things.
