Considering a RC 5 for the next knife. Noticed it's avail. in 1095 and D2.
ESEE seems to have good hardening. Opinions on the two diff. steels ? Is D2 hardeness at 60 - 62 ? Any chipping issues ?

Thanks

ESEE 5 is only available in 1095. Are you looking at the Ontario Rat 5? My suggestion is go with ESEE and forget about it, amazing knifes for the money

To my knowledge the ESEE 5 is only in 1095.Ontario might have made a RAT 5 in D2.I'm not sure on that either,as I'm into Rowen ESEEs not Ontario RATs.

As usual ya'll are right. My bad. It's the Ontario that's D2.

Thanks.

Just got the ESEE-5. Love it. All ESEE products are 1095 right now. Their upcoming folder will be something stainless I believe but don't quote me there...not following that.

1095 is probably the best steel for the 5's intended purpose. It'll take a rediculous beating but when it does get dull, it'll be easy to sharpen.

Do the BK2 and get the micarta scales. It is an excellent knife!! I was disappointed in my RC5. The handle on the RC5 does not hold the butt of the hand well during chopping...it tends to slip and needs to be regripped constantly. It is a tank (RC5) but so is the BK2. The BK2 seems to be better suited for camping and bushcraft. Just my $0.02
