ESEE vs. Ontario

I hope this subject isn't beaten to death! I did a search and only came up with a couple which didn't help me much. I am looking at a pretty good deal on an Ontario Rd7, but was wondering if I should hold out for an ESEE RC6 or Junglas instead. I know they are pretty much the same steel. I do prefer a nylon sheath over kydex. Anyone own both and can give me an honest comparison?

You will get a better fit/finish with the ESEE and an awesome warranty to go with it.

Given your choices I would go for the RC-6, aka ESSE 6. It's a very practical knife that can slice and dice or serve you with much aplomb in the woods. ESSE service is commendable as well.

awesome warranty to go with it.

it just doesn't get better than a knife by ESEE. warranty, looks, feel/fit and in my humble opinion a much better company to deal with all around. those alone are worth going with an ESEE instead of a Ontario. I sell far more ESEE knives than I do Ontario knives even though I have never had an issue or complaint about either one of them.

I can't believe that anyone would ask that question on this forum.

Talk about a herd of dead horses.:)

actually, I don't recall seeing a lot of comparisons of the ESEE/RAT cutlery knives and the Ontario Ranger knives, but they're not the same steel.
ESEE uses 1095.
the Ranger knives are 5160.
that said, I have not seen or handled any of the Ontario Rangers, but the complaint I saw in feedback had input from Justin himself offering to trade the guy straight up for a new knife because the handle scales on his Ontario were misground/misaligned, so he's definitely keeping an eye on the customer service end of things.

The RC-6 isn't very good at chopping wood, nor is the RD7 - if you want to chop wood then go with the Junglas. However if you will use an axe or saw and wont be chopping wood with the knife then the RC-6 should handle pretty much any task that you require - that would be my pick.

I recently had to deal with OKC with a warranty issue and I sent one e-mail with a brief description of the issue and sent it in. I had my brand new replacement in under 10 days. I had an OKC Rat 1 plain edge, that did not open as smoothly as a second one I bought with a combo edge. I really didnt realize the first one was off until I compared it to the second one. I sent in the e-mail to ask about it and the rest is history.
I own both knives you are asking about and I think the warranty advantage ESSE usually gets did not apply in this particular case. As far as which of my knives do I think is better, I would say the Rat 7 because I like the color of the scales better. Based on performance, IMHO, its a dead heat. I am sure you probably already made your purchase but I felt compelled to share my positive experience with OKC customer service. I still love ESSE too, but those prices have me checking if OKC has a comparable knife at a better price point.
