Email I just sent to ka-bar on their website:
" I recently purchased an eskabar bk-14' from milarm in Edmonton Alberta canada, and discovered after purchasing that the sheath dulls the knife and after checking n forums I've discovered that this is a problem that others have reported with this sheath. Other than this problem I love the knife it's the perfect size for a fixed blade edc. Is there a fix for this or a replacement sheath? Thanks"

The reply:
Thank you for contacting KA-BAR Knives!

We were not aware of an ongoing issue with the BK14, however I will be sure to forward your email onto the product development team. At this time, there is not another sheath available. Thank you for your comments and concerns.

Thank you and have a great day,

There are many makers on the forums here that would love to make a sheath for you, all you have to do is ask.

The fix that I've found is that after not too long, the edge wears a groove and no longer contacts the sheath. No dulling occurs after that. Be mindful of how your draw the knife out, too. Are you putting pressure on the blade edge as you draw it out? If so, try drawing it out straight and see if that help.

Other than that, there are some good makers on here that will do whatever you want for a sheath. Azwelke, Godspeed, and the710 all do great kydex work. Skystorm, Sagewood Gear, and Hedgehog Leatherworks all make great leather for them.

I just ordered a conceal sheath for mine from skystorm leather he seemed to have the most variety for the bk14 and the price isn't too far out there for custom work

That's a load. They know darn well, they just don't care. The unofficial response is "If the sheath dulls the edge then it's your fault for dragging the edge on the sheath."

I tried opening up the channel where the edge goes and it helped but I have to be very deliberate and careful to keep the edge from touching the sheath. It would be a great sheath if they made it out of something else.

mrn8, thanks for the recommendation!

I'll throw my dos centavos in on the sheath.... the early ones were made with "glass-filled" nylon and the new ones don't have glass.... basically the glass is supposed to be what's dulling the blade so KaBar to their credit changed the formula for the nylon they used.

Will a "Kydex" sheath fix the problem? Not necessarily.. because a poor design is just that, and while Kydex doesnt' have the glass if you get a crappy Kydex sheath you've got the same basic problem and there's a lot of them out there.

btw-this thread is useless without pictures: :D

if the sheath looks like it was made for a tanto blade, it's the old one some folks had issues with. If it looks made for a drop point knife, it's the current production.

it may be that you have an old production sheath.
if when drawing the knife you put your thumb on the spine of the sheath so the spine of the blade drags instead of the edge, you shouldn't have any issues with dulling.

I forgot about the tanto-shaped sheaths. If you have one of those, let me know, and I'll ship you a current production sheath.

There are still plenty of glass filled ones out there, even in new boxes.

It is a problem, that has been corrected, unfortunately, thousands went out long before the problem was discovered.

Not to mention, the warehouse stock.

Hate to hear it, but mine do it too.
