Can anyone tell me if Eskrima is a good way to introduce myself to FMA? is it a valid, usefull MA? How long does it take to get proficiant with Eskrima? And most important is it fun? :)

Escrima is a great choice to start with in the FMAs. How long it will take to develop proficiency depends upon you, how fast you learn, how much your practice, and who you practice with. Great stuff, and alot of fun, too.

I'd advise you though to select a good school/style of eskrima. There are schools that are famous but their techniques would end up unuseable in realistic situations. But I guess this happens with all Martial Arts, that there are those who just teach for the money.

If there is any doubt about how 'good' a school is, all one needs to do is to try them out. Either take a class or 'touch hands' with the teacher. In my experience, most of the folks i've seen and met were pretty darn good. The most important thing is to practice with other good training partners.

Just my opinion.

As i live in Belgium it is not all that easy to find a school but i found one that's not to far from my town. It is a member of the INTERNATIONAL KALI ARNIS ESKRIMA FEDERATION . I don't have much information about the styles they practice but what i have seen from the two trainings i attended was that it is practical oriënted. Does any one inhere has any thoughts about the www.ikaef.com, either positive or negative?

Thx

Based solely on what I've seen the school looks pretty impressive. See if the school allows you to go month to month and go from there.

indeed, it does has a monthly fee, thought it was strange at first ( my former aikido club asked to pay for a year in advance), but this seems to be normal. Both trainers seem to be well qualified, not to many macho's in the school, and the older students don't seem to mind when u join them. I think i'll stick with them for a while. Non commercial, more "friends training together". :D

I have only had very limited exposure to FMA (...so perhaps I shouldn't pontificate on the subject?!?!) but... I was told that the names Escrima, Kali & Arnis were somewhat interchangeable - the names have more to do with which Island(s) they come from than stylistic differences.

...Of course I could be totally wrong

No u are not wrong, some clubs tend to use one of the three names, some use a combination. The difficult part is that Eskrima has different "styles" because is has it's basis in tribal warfare. So each village, island practiced a slightly different form, even blending with ancient MA styles from the surrounding countries, as to there location.
This makes the FMA a dificult MA to describe to other MA. It is not like Karate or Aikido where u have 3 or 4 mayor "schools" The style i try to practise is the Inayan "style", a blend of different native Fillipino MA.

Where in the US (VA to be precise) could I take these type of classes? It seems with all the karate and tae kwon do dojos around the country, FMA is little known. I feel that in a real life situation, they are more suited than any karate class that is given. I am looking for something that is simple to learn, but very very effective in a real life situation. I would like to learn and actually become certified in Floro's Fighting System since I heard so many good things about it. The problem is that the closest instructor is in NY. Can anyone help?

I live in Liège, Bruges is at the other side of the country but i don't mind to drive a litle more km's to get a good instruction... :D

Loki88 did you ever heard about a dojo called "Defcross" in Leuven?
I had a seminar with them sthg like a month ago and i found the teachers to be really valuable!
Maybe you should pay them a visit too.
Here's their website www.defcross.be
They teach Kali-Arnis-Eskrima, Submission Fighting and Shootfighting.

Hello Lem,

Please contact Sifu Snoeck Chris at zenmind_2000@yahoo.com, he will probably be able to point you to various schools in your area. Also, if you can attend, I will be introducing Sayoc Kali in Belgium this coming weekend in Gent. (Contact Sifu Snoeck for details)

Good to hear it.... ;)

I was at the latest Sayoc Kali seminar in Tournai (btw did you atempted this seminar, maybe we already talk to each other?) and i was really impressed by the system and even more by the skills of the teachers (Guro Tom Kier and Guro Ray Dionaldo).
Too bad, it'll be in the other side of the country... but who knows... maybe someday in Liège.... :D

Keep up the good work and thanks for the link (i'll contact Sifu Snoeck in a while).

Stay safe,

Lem
