I am sure the older polished aluminium Espadas that were aus8 were not marked and the newer s35vn one say so on the blade?

I picked up a XL but the seller said it was s35vn but it doesnt say so on the blade? i think its a slightly older one thats aus 8 but want to be sure....

If it’s S35VN then it’ll be marked.
There’s a possibility that it is XHP, because CS made some unmarked XHP when they first transitioned in 2015, but those boxes should be marked XHP with Lynn’s signature.
You are probably getting aus8. Keep it though, it might be worth as much as the S35VN version in a few years.

Personally, I would return it - IF you purchased a S35VN blade - you should get an S35VN blade. As for the future - who can tell what something will be worth. But I would guess, the S35VN blade will always be more desirable and then, maybe worth more. Just my 2 cents.

the earliest transition versions xhp ones weren't marked on the knife if I remember right. the boxes where marked though. least for the recon 1s. not sure about other models. course my memory may be off too, but I seem to remember that as I got an early one, a recon 1, its not marked steel wise

Yes, that is correct - the 1st version Recon 1's were not marked XHP. Not many were made. Glossy DLC coated blade is an easy side-by-side why to tell these un-marked XHP Recon 1's from the regular AUS8A (Matte finish) version. The box is marked XHP. I don't know if there are any other cold steel knives, the XHP models, that were un-marked.
