Hi Folks,
New member in need of advice from the experts. My wife has inherited a nice collection of knives from her late brother who also was a part-time dealer at his local gun/knife shows. Even after allowing family members to pick out some nice memories, there are still 60+ knives that we will need to identify, price, and sell over the next few months.

The list covers a huge variety -

Brands: Ek Commando, Benchmade AFCK, Case, Boker, Camillius, Rigid, Buck, Kissing Crane, Schrade, Gerber, Parker

Styles: Folders, Fixed, Couple Customs, Automatic [1]

Condition: Brand New to only a NUB :o

What would be the your recommendations for a relative novice who doesn't wish to step on any forum toes yet needs a ton of help in proceeding forward? For example, there are a few knives that are starting to show some signs of corrosion, i.e. green brass, etc. Should I polish [remember, amateur here] these up or take a hands off approach? Should I cherry-pick the best for individual sale or... I digress. I realize not enough info, but some good general pushes in the right direction would be very helpful at this point.

Thanks,
vanG

As far as Identifying the knives if they are Case/boker/cam/buck/gerber/benchmade those are big name brands and I bet picture posting will get you the name and model # of 90%+ of the knives. I'd start there. As far as selling them, if that is your intention I would buy a gold membership ($25 bucks) and post them on this site. I sold my knives here VERY QUICKLY and my thread for only 7-8 knives had 1700 views. Your thread could accumulate thousands of views and sell many of those knives in mere days. All you would have to do is ship them out.

actually I did buy the Gold Membership, but it's not showing yet. go figure.

you have to go to your user cp and select gold membership under group memberships to show up as gold.

and welcome to BFC!

That Benchmade AFCK is really a piece of junk, but I'll take it off your hands for five bucks to help you out though :p. From what I know, they are pretty sought after so if no one decides to keep it you should get pretty good money for that one, sorry but I don't know enough to put an exact price. Like bill said, they are mostly big brands so your best bet is putting up pics of them, that way we can give you accurate and specific info. Welcome to BFC :).

Congrats, yeah go to your user cp and change over to gold under group membership like Gundude said. I promise the $25 you spent will be all you need to dump those knives for a good price ASAP. Becoming a gold member here has done wonders for my wallet, easily worth the $25 bucks. I sold 7 knives I couldn't sell otherwise getting me ~$400 bucks.

van, if I were you, I'd think about my selling strategy. Do I want to hold out for top dollar and sell each one individually (with all the work that entails), or do I want to sell them in lots or maybe all together and get some money for them right quick? That might have an influence on how you go about it.

catspa, that's the reason I found the forum. I did the Craigslist / ebay deal and because I didn't know what I was doing did not make out very well. Thought you guys might be able to help me over the hurdles so as not to lose my shirt this go around.

What about the green brass? Should I polish at least a little???

Hey peanut,
$5 for the AFCK, huh? let me think about it... uhhh... NO. Born at night, but not last night. Thanks for the welcome, all.

Hi vang52 -

I would not - my opinion is let the buyer do that and don't risk doing anything to the knife that would be detrimental to the wishes of the buyer.

You could post pictures of each knife and then people here could tell you piece by piece which ones could stand cleaning up and which should be left alone.

Without doing that, it's probably best policy to keep them as-is.

best regards -

I have the quick fix for you. Ship them all to me and the ones that have value I PROMISE to send ya back. :D

Okay. Thanks for the suggestion, mqqn! KC, I will accept your offer for the quick fix when you send me $3,600 for shipping and handling. That work for you? :D

I guess it's on to the collecting/pricing forum from here. Thanks for the "help", guys.

i'd sell them in lots by brand. lemme know what bucks ya have and i'll give ya a fair price.

Selling the knives individually could take ages, not to mention the cost of shipping to multiple people (perhaps multiple times to the same people). Pittsteele's got a pretty good idea. It might be best to group some knives by brand, or perhaps price, style, bone, etc. I would certainly be interested in picking up a group of stockmen.
