looks like a claw hatchet and a carpenters Adze. found them at an estate sale an took a liking to the handle on the Adze........sharp lookin handle. thinking about cleaning up the hatchet an was wondering if its possible to get the same polished look on the Adze as well??? also the Axe is a bit worn so is it worth it to try an salvage the blade on a wheel ???

The Adze looks like its just caked in dirt and rust. If your intent on fixing them a good test is soak both heads in vinegar for a few days, let it really soak into the steel's pores and get the rust off. itll probably leave a hefty patina but that can be cleaned off as well. Once soaked, take out a can of elbow grease and a rag and go to town. soap and water are your friends as well, then check the pock marks left by the rust and re-evaluate.

As to the handles, your probably better off getting new ones for both, dont need any surprises like a head flying off during usage. The Adze im sure you can find on the internet, it looks pretty dry though

Cool finds. My girl and I are hitting up some sales tomorrow to try and find some good axes/hatchets. Wish me luck. :D

As to your tools, it's hard to say from the pic but that hatchet looks 100% useable IMO. I would clean the blade up and give her a whirl. If you want to find out more about reviving your adz, check out the axe sub-forum. A lot of the guys use the vinegar soak like described above with a steel brush after. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find a walkthrough.
