Estwing Hatchets. Opinion?

I think a metal handled full size axe sounds not that pleasant to use, due to lack of shock abosorbtion. However, a hatchet is a different beast, and doesn't seem like given the typical usage (small tasks, not three hours of constant chopping) it doesn't seem like it would be a disadvantage. And the obvious advantage is that the head will stay attached. (One hopes).

I see that Western and Buck (?) have both made different variations on the all metal hatchet, but the Estwing with the hollow handle seems the best thought out and most ubiquitous.

Anyone use one? Have any opinions? Which size do you have or like? They come in rubber and leather handle versions. Preferences?

Personally for a small hatchet, if you have the money to get a BG or wetterlings do it, but if not go for something like a gerber or fiskars, though estwing do make good hatchets, especially the lather staked version.

I have both the blue handled Estwings (hatchet and camp axe). The camp axe stays in the truck and the hatchet dose every thing else.

I like them. They are working tools and not to fancy to chop roots, cut fence post with nails or any thing else I would not want to use a good chopper on. There sort of the machete of my axes, If they get nicked or chipped they get file sharpened and the dings can stay.

They, as said around here "cut bigger than they are". If you can't do it with them you need a chain saw. Nothing fancy, but good hard work tools.

They are durable for the price and as GunSnob said great beaters, but I have never seen a perfectly aligned head on any I have looked at..Not really an issue for a rough use beater i guess

at least the heads are not huge & clunky thick profiled, like the cheap hatchet but for $20 more you can get a Grunsfors Bruks hatchet which is hand made to near perfection.

I love my GB hatchets and have placed the Estwing to rough use only status at my cabin..My "modified" GB wildlife hatchet now goes with me anytime I go hunting in the woods!!
