Hey guys, I was curious if anyone could who owned both could compare one of their higher end tac-hawks to either a riggers hawk from Estwing or one of their other full-tang axes. I was wanting something more in the 16-18" range which is why I was liking the 17" riggers, but I also like the looks of the pricier 'hawks and wasn't sure if I was willing to spend the extra $2-300 for something that was about equal in performance.

Anyone who owns a $300 hawk will tell you that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. To say anything else would be an admission that they had spent their money unwisely - something we are hesitant to do.

I freaking love my Estwing Rigger's Axe. It's a heck of a rough-use farm tool. I use it a lot when I'm bracing sagging fencing around the pasture during mud season. Chops the ends of the support stakes into points and nails them to the posts. The nail notch has seen a lot of use dragging old discarded barbed wire that I've found strewn here and there.

The Estwing rigger ia a hammer head, the full tangs often have a spike.

So the basic differences are obvious, they are two different tools with different uses.

Would a $2-300 tool give you 2-3X the performance increase? Despite a lot of posts to the contrary, no. Nobody has set up empirical testing to sort that out. We just get to infer from some typical observations of similar items what might be better. Would a forged full tank hawk withstand levering more than one that was just a flat tang with composite handles, probably. One with a full round handle might do well, too. It would also depend on what alloy steel, which could tip the scales either way with inherent strength. Heat treat and tempering could, also.

With hawks, you pick what you like, and use it. More than that is up to you.

If you want a full tang Estwing and a Hawk, too, Guess What????

Oh YES!
