Hello all - been playing around a bit with etching logo on Damascus. It doesn't show up very well etched over the Damascus etch pattern. What is best way to do this?

My idea is to sand blade to 800/1,000 grit, clean really good, then etch logo. Then, take scotch tape to block off an area around logo, paint with fingernail polish and let dry. Then remove all tape leaving fingernail polish covering logo etch. Then do normal Damascus etch. Once pattern is etched as desired, clean with soapy water. Clean and complete Damascus etch cleaning to final look as normal for Damascus etching (good info from Stacy and others there). Once the Damascus pattern is fixed as desired, use acetone to remove fingernail polish to expose logo etc. Does that sound reasonable? OR - I'm certainly open to correct way to do this.

Thanks for any suggestions or guidance,

Works for me, but I use an oval shield logo so it is a bit more simple than when I just used my last name.

My only addition to your plan would be to use packing tape. It is stiffer and easier to handle than scotch tape.

Thanks for the confirmation. I did a small test sample, and it seemed to be the way to go, but wanted to confirm it was really the way to go.

That's pretty much how I do it.
But I designed my logo to have a shield. I have done customers names and had Ernie make me a stencil with a oval around it.

I was going to mention that if you do a child type mark and get the stencils from Ernie he now provides a masking stencil. I am still using the last batch I bought form him, so I have to paint by hand.

Bruce Bump has a similar in-shield (oval) damascus logo, and don't forget there is also Salem Straub's torch!
The effect are very nice!
