I have been experimenting...built an etcher from an old computer power supply and using the 12VDC line. I am getting from .05 to .11 amps (all over the map, probably not good) through it using my (fairly mild) table salt electrolyte. I figured less was more at first. Still, the edges seem fuzzy to me. Am I being too critical? What do y'all think!?!?!? There is probably 2.5-3 minutes of actual etching/contact, no more than 10 seconds at a time in a 5-10 on, 5-10 off cycle.

I don't know if that is on a test piece or what, but the scratch pattern/grit finish seems a little heavy and the electrolyte is creeping in the scratches. Maybe try a higher grit finish or a mild polish then mark.

After you etch, neutralize and clean go back over that area with a really fine piece of sandpaper on a sanding block. Well that's what I do on my knives with flat grinds and hand rubbed finishes, not sure about polished blades.

that looks pretty good. Definitely legible, but there is a little bleed like mentioned already.

I have found that etching is one of the trickiest parts of making knives, at least in my experience. I had very limited success when I first started. As you do it more often you will figure out what works best with your particular setup, but I can say right now that you've done really well so far working with a homemade rig:thumbup:

Looks pretty good. I think the scratches are most of the bleeding problems. I would also try only about 3 seconds of contact at a time and off for the 5-10 you already do.

does not look liek its burned in too deep what system are you using
i like to burn the mark in deep then blacken it that way no one is taking it off

Following advice from Stacy, I started doing mine in much shorter segments. I installed a momentary power button and push it 2-3 times per second for 3-4 seconds. I get a much nicer etch than I used to when I used 10 second intervals. YMMV
