Bruce-

The etching looks cool, but I think your knives are so beautiful on their own that they don't need anything extra like that.

Simple elegance

Just my opinion. I will do something like that if specifically asked to, but otherwise I feel like it sort of clutters the overall aesthetics (not to mention covering that hard earned hand rubbed finish!).

But we know what opinions are like...

Very cool handle! Dyed shin bone eh? Cool.

Bruce the etching looks really nice, but I am with Nick about your blades needing nothing else, they are beautiul as is with that hand rubbed finish.

Bruce,

Great job! I think I read on CKD's forum that you used ferric chloride as an echant and nail polish as a resist - true?

Can you provide a little more detail? I'm interested in trying it.

Did you do your name with the same method? How is that etched (if it is etched?)

Mike

Yes ferric chloride was my etchant and I used nail polish for the resist....
Clean your blade and then using a artist brush paint the silouette and then paint the rest of the blade that you dont want etched, make sure that you get a good even coat with no thin spots or the etchant will etch here also. With this done and dry (about a half hour)Submerge the blade in the ferric chloride until you get the depth you want....
My name is put on with a electric etcher that uses stencils..
Hope this helps,Bruce

You let it set until it reaches a depth that you like.I preffer a deep etch so it doesnt have a chance of wereing off....Bruce

I was wondering.....can these etches be done with the Electro system (something about dealing with Acid brings me shivers)? Making one now and was wondering...

Michael

As long as you have a good stencil and a big enough electrode head and pad I believe that it would work fine......Using rerric chloride isnt that bad it doesnt burn you if you get some on yor hands for a minute(I wouldnt submerse my hand in it though) And it doesnt put off any gas or vapors that I am aware of.......Bruce

A funny story about Ferric Chloride. In college I learned all about the manufacturing of printed circuit boards. I had a brain fart and decided to make my own board for a project I was working on. I got the stuff from radio shack and went down to my dads shop in the basement. After I was done, for some reason I put the FC in a glass jar with a metal top. A week later I went down to the shop to get something and discovered a fine layer of rust over EVERY metal object. Everything from his table saw to his collection of nuts and bolts. Even stuff in drawers had rusted. Turns out the fumes from the FC had eaten through the jar lid. Needless to say, the old man was pissed! Just thought I'd let you know how potent this stuff is.

I forgot to say that it needs to be kept in a sealed Plastic container,I'm sorry.....Hey look at it this way,at least it didnt eat a hole through the work bench and eat up a bunch of tools......Ferric chloride is still safer than Hydrocloric and Muratic acids to use around the shop.I would rather a few rust causing fumes in the shop than severe burns and toxic fumes let alone holes being eaten in my shop........Bruce
