Etching Machine Decision

I'm a new bladesmith and new to the blade forum. I've completed 12 knives so far and of those I've sold 6, donated 2, and given 2 as gifts. Unfortunately none have been marked. I've pretty much decided to go with an etcher rather than a stamp. Has anyone had experience with the Martronics Super Etch-o-matic (15v 10a) and their 440 UV Stencil Maker? For the price it claims to do everything that others do at half the cost. I'm always a little bit leary of a claim like that so I thought I'd ask some more experienced folks like yourselves. I'd sure appreciate any feedback.

I should start with the disclaimer that I sell both of those units. Interestingly, I bought the Electro-chem Personalizer Plus before I started selling the Martronics products and I still use it. I had previously used the basic etch-o-matic - and it worked fine for hundreds of knives but I've never regretted the bucks spent on the more powerful unit. I suspect the difference is more between models than between brands.

As for the 440 stencil maker, I can't believe I ever got by without it. It's easy enough to have someone else make you a good stencil at reasonable price, with your logo on it. With the stencil maker, you can also quickly make up custom stencils for wedding cake knives - presentation knives - samples for a business - customer monograms..... and the list goes on. As a bonus, it can also do everything from metal or plastic name tags to rubber stamps. The process is simple and anything you can print from your computer onto a transparency is fair game - pictures, fonts, patterns.

Hope this helps some.

Rob, i tried going to your Knife Making Supplies page to see what and how much your stencils were, but i got an error each time.

:o <- That's not a pink smiley - it's an embarassed smirk. (I don't do pink - but this probably isn't my first emabarassed moment)

I've gone 2 years without a problem on that server and now the database goes down. You can get all the info on the machines at www.etch-o-matic.com. You can also buy them there, or you can probably find them cheaper through various distributors (some of whose web stores might be down at the moment.)

Let me know if there is anything specific you need to know.

Rob!

Disclaimer aside, I haven't gotten any negative feedback yet. Hopefully the same will continue and make my decision an easy one.

Thanks Rob, i was just wondering what the prices and types of stencil material you had and what the smallest size would be?

I don't want to hijack the thread or get too commercial here. I'll email you after supper.

Not to high jack this thread, but Rob gave me a great deal on purchasing a Evenheat oven from him. I would listen to anything he says about the etching machines, and not hesitate on purchasing one from him..
Thanks for the great deal on the oven Rob!
