How hard would it be to break into an older DC power supply and add an AC output option? I see things like this for sale all the time.

Look for a model train transformer/speed controller. DC for the train output, many had ac outputs for accessories like lights and whistles.

I picked up a used AC DC benchtop power supply on ebay a while back for an etching machine
