Etching Stencils

I use IMG and they have been great to work over the last couple of years.

Patricia Bruno is your contact person there and she will handle the graphics design stuff and everything. Great folks, quick turnaround, and the stencils last if you take care of them.

Another +1 for Particia & img-electromark.com

She's great, responds fast, great at working to what you want exactly too. Awesome job, quick shipping too.

Thanks I will give her a call. About how many etches are you getting from one stencil?

Their sheets with 8-10 stencils are 10 bucks after the initial art charge. I've gotten more than 4 from 1 stencil (still using the O.G one lol). They are built to last, you'll be good.

What is there initial charge?

There is an art charge of $40 for her to size your art to fit the stencil, she'll also help size and pick font's, etc.

Cost ends up being $50 for the first sheet - and if you reorder it's $10.

There are other people in this game that make stencils that don't last - i've never had a quality issue and i'll say from my other maker friends they've pushed me to IMG (which i've had great results with).

I've been using the Mark 440 Stencil maker from Martronics. If you can print it out on a transparency you can make a stencil out of it.

I've made my own and they're ok

I've also gotten them from Ernie Grospitch and they're excellent. Much better than the one's I make.

That number varies so much from person to person it's really hard to tell how many etches are got from each stencil. DustinY said he gets "more than 4", most folks seem to be 15 to 20 and more per stencil. I use mg-electromark.com to make my own stencils and get..... I don't know how many but it's quite a few. A buddy I make stencils for gets well over 100 etches from each stencil. He doesn't make knives but makes capo for dobro type guitars. You can see the etch here: https://charliescapo.com/

Any program you can use for creating what you want is just fine as long as you can print a PDF, jpg, etc file from it. Anything from simple PaintBrush to complex Inkscape.

How do you like this? Is it worth the money and are the stencils you make the same quality as ones you would order?
I can't speak to the quality difference because I've never ordered any from anywhere. I do know that for me, the ability to make any font, size, or image is well worth it over ordering. Although, if you had a one size fits all stencil requirement, ordering would probably be the way to go.

I've only etched about a dozen blades so my experience is extremely limited compared to others but below in the spoiler tab are some examples without mucking up the thread.

There is another thread about using Cricut die cutter ("cricket") with adhesive backed vinyl to make single use stencils. I was interested in trying that, but the person I knew with a Cricut machine doesn't have it anymore. You could stencil customer's name, steel type, pattern code, date, commemorative phrases.

Looks great. Thank you!
