etching Talonite

I just completed my first Talonite knife.
I hand finished the blade to 600 grit. That is actually more than recommended. I noticed Talonite has an interesting "grain pattern" if you can call it that.

I was wondering if anyone has tried to etch Talonite. If so what were the results. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has thought about it. I may try it on a small blade.

Let me know. Thanks

John

etch it with what???? the solder flux does nothing to the stuff....and i think you know whats in flux...if not try read the ingredients....dont think mere men can buy the stuff that will etch this material.

John, I dont think any over the counter etchant will touch it. I have tried Muratic, Hydrochloric, Nitric, Ferric Chloride and Sulpheric acids and no etching. I havent tried Aqua Regia or Flouric. It can be etched electrochemicaly, I use the same machine and electrolyte on Talonite as I do on stainless steel.

What electrolyte and voltage/amperage do you use, Rob?

As a former biochemist, I strongly advise you to NOT try hydrofluoric acid, or aqua regia. The former will etch glass (in fact, that is what they use to frost the inside of light bulbs) and used to come in wax containers; probably they are plastic now.

Aqua regia ('royal water) is a mix of acids, Nitric and Sulphuric, if IRC, and it will dissolve gold, hence the name.

You don't want to fool with these very dangerous chemicals. Muriatic acid, BTW, is the same as hydrochloric acid, just not as pure. Walt

First off, Osbourn, I use a Marking Methods brand machine, and for a deep etch I set it on 3, deep etch, DC. Zap it for 6 seconds or so then go to AC, normal etch, 5, and zap it for another 6 seconds or so. I use the MSC #1 electrolyte. The same one for stainless steel.

Walt, your advice is damn good on the acids, I should have posted that earlier. However the Aqua Regia is a mixture of Nitric and Hydrochloric acid, of this I am sure as less than a year ago I was employed at a gold mine and used lots of it. Will Nitric and Sulpheric do the same?

PS, Walt, be looking for a package very very soon.

Rob; your formula for aqua regia is correct. Substituting sulfuric acid wouldn't work.
My point was that it was very dangerous stuff, which I am sure you realize as well.

I look forward with pleasure to a package!! Will it be before Christmas? <---cheap shot

Best regards, Walt

Be advised with what I know of Hydrofluoric Acid. From what I was taught if it does come in contact with your skin it will not give you an acid burn like you would expect. Instead it goes directly to your bone marrow and destroys that! YUK extemely painfull and I am not sure if it is treatable. Please read the warning label on this one.
Take care guys!
