What is the best way to etch wrought iron? I have heard some use Muratic <sp?> acid, which I can't find. My normal etchant for Hamons and Damascus, Archer Etchant, doesn't seem to do much.

Thanks,

Seth

Muriatic acid [hydrochloric acid] is used to clean stone and concrete, check those sources .It shouldn't be hard to find.

Muriatic acid can be found at Home Depot and Lowe's. I use ferric I leave it in 5 minutes then wash off with baking soda and water. I do this till I reach the desired finish and then I bead blast it. :D Good luck

Hmmm...I have used new ferric ( Archer Etchant ) cut 3x1 with water and am not really seeing any service patterns. Maybe my wrought is not what the guy said it was I purchased it from. Any ideas on how to check?

Seth, I etch it in a 5 parts distilled water to 1 part Ferric Chloride mix (same as my damascus).

It takes quite a while. I'd say at least 30 minutes total (several 5 minute etches with a tooth-brush scrubbing in-between).

The Muriatic is in the painting section at Home Depot... it's sold as concrete prep before painting with epoxy paint.

I like nitric acid etch for wrought. (good luck finding it though) and the ferric comes in second.
