Well, here we are, last 31 days of 2011, and man has this year gone by fast. Next year is looking quite promising, so, lets get this one started.

Ethan's December Challenge

We know that December is a busy, cold month for most, I know it is for me, and we wanted to give ya'll a chance to have a good contest, have some fun, but respect your time. Between family and shopping, it can get pretty busy, so this months contest will be more planning, with the actual work, taking place later.

Christmas Tree Shelter

Pretty simple actually, when Christmas is over, make a shelter out of your Christmas tree. Just your tree, nothing else. It needs to be able to fit your body in, and keep the elements off you as best you can. Its just one tree, we're not expecting you build a debris hut out of one Christmas tree, but build the framework of a good shelter, and cover it as best you can. You can do this inside or outside, makes no difference to me.

Be creative, and have fun, that's the point of this contest. Building the frame work is easy, but lacing your boughs in so you get the most coverage will help you gain some valuable experience in shelter building as well.

"I don't use a real tree" " I don't celebrate Christmas that way"

Fine with me, don't enter in the contest then. Thats the way it works.

Oh, and a sick twist, I'm gonna put a premium on those that use THE SMALLEST BKT THEY CAN. So, small knives count here fellas. Wanna use your BK9? Go right ahead. BK6? Hell yeah, rock out. But the guy that whoops this thing with a Remora, will be getting more style points, just sayin'.

So, just a quick recap before we get to the fine print, one Christmas tree, one knife, one shelter. Good, now, the fine print.

Must be 18 to enter. You are responsible for yourself and your actions. No one else is respsponsible for you, so if you can't pay for it, don't break it.

So, there might be some folks out there that are thinking, I use a fake tree, or I don't celebrate Christmas in that manner, and to that I say, oh well. You can pick up a Christmas tree on Dec.26 for about $3 here, so, there are options if you want to participate, just a suggestion.

This is a Beckerhead contest only, and you must be a paying member (Basic, Gold, Platinum, Knifemaker/Craftsman, Dealer) to enter.

No chatting in this thread, to enter, post "Beckerhead #xxx, Grinchin' it". You must post it just the way it is written, or you are DQ'd. :D

So, take your time, plan your shelter. Be creative, have fun, and Merry Christmas, ya'll.

Winner gets a BK2/BK11/BK13 combo set
Second place gets a BK2
Third place gets a BK11

Contest ends New Years Day, when I wake up and lock it. And I plan on having a hangover and a sore back, so......

Moose

Beckerhead #143, Grinchin' it.

Who else saw mommy kissing Santa Claus? Little Johnny thats who. I knew little Johnny's mom was a HO HO HO and wanted to spread some cheer of her own. I didn't even get to show her the North Pole and that little rascal ratted me out to Mrs. Claus. By the time I got back to the North Pole my stuff was in the snow and so was the Christmas tree with a note saying that I was sleeping outside tonight. Great, I ticked her off when I trimmed my beard and colored it with Just for men. Something about a mid life crisis. But I really ticked her off this time. Anyways I was out in the cold to fend for myself. All I had was the Christmas tree and a BK&T Remora that I was going to give to little Johnny but I gave him coal instead cause he can't keep his yap shut. I had an Idea I got from watching SurvivorElf and went to work.

These pictures are to document the night out for evidence in our sure to be upcoming divorce.

Here is the knife I took from little Johnny.

Me with the Christmas tree. She kept the big tree for herself.

Me useing the technique from SurvivorElf to remove some branches and make room to lay under it. After I laced the branches in the roof for better coverage.

Home sweet home.

Ha! Seriously, this was fun. Good luck to everyone else out there in Beckerland.

Be safe,

Ok, got the chance to give it a go today. I already had the idea as soon as I accepted the challenge. All I needed was a forked tree, my Christmas tree and my BKLE10. I picked a spot by our back field and set to chopping. The tinsel still on the tree is for wind direction verification, oh and I was too lazy to get it all.

Our tree after being stripped(almost entirely) of decoration.

Found a forked tree, so I locked the Christmas tree base in and set to clearing branches underneath.

Threw some boughs down on the ground for insulation and filled the gaps in the tree for better shelter.

"Beckerhead #26, Grinchin' it".

When I bought this tree I know the branches were longer.
I thought this will be fun, but pretty straight foward. Ha Ha Ha.
Well after delimbing the tree, I found I had no branches longer than a foot and a half.
I thought well this is gonna be fun. My son just started laughing.
So here we go.

The tools.

Edited to add:
Well, I'm gonna chat up the thread a little. Not "grinching it" after all. Oh well. Our tree this year has been especially healthy and purty, and my fatherly authority was over-ridden and the tree gets to stay up until next week. (Most years our tree is dried-up-dead & sitting by the dumpster by the 28th.)

I will make a shelter with my son when I take it down, for the fun of it. :)

Thats a big tree Murph. I still need to get one all I have so far is a fake tree.

Tis the season.

Season's almost over, and only 9 Grinches and one Chatter. Psyop, you know who you are.

So far we got some showings, and the New Year's almost upon us.

Beckerheads, we salute you.:D

Moose

So here's my shelter:

Christmas tree at the construction site:

Cross grain batoning with BK11

ChristmasTreeShelter004.jpg

Bare frame after chopping trunk in half

Christmas003.jpg

Finished product

ChristmasTreeShelter008.jpg

Me settling in for an overnighter - I pretty much could get in it but not Jack the Lab too

ChristmasTreeShelter011.jpg

So there we have it - a bigger tree would sure have helped but actually it did make for good wind shelter and instantly a bit warmer!
Happy New Year everyone!

Steve

Moose
