Alright kiddies, here's one for the folks in the colder climes. Pretty simple, build a snow shelter. Don't have any snow? Well, you'll either have to come up with a suitable substitute or wait until next month.

No building code, but there are some specs ya'll need to adhere to. Igloo, dugout, snow pile with a hole in it, but you need to research it, and plan it out, and put a good effort into it, because, you got competition.

Yep, competition. Just so happens that there is one person that Ethan holds in high regards when it comes to building a snow shelters. Turns out, he's a BKT Mod, better know as THE BLADITE!!!!

Bladite builds a shelter pretty much every year, and I don't think this one will be much different. So, I suggest you either use him as a resource, our try to beat his ass like a drum. I suggest the whole resource thing, mostly because, you're gonna have a hard time beating him.

AND, if he want's to, he can enter in the contest on this one, and run away with all the prizes. Yup, ALL the prizes.

So, rules are simple, and to the point, make a snow shelter, suitable to sustain life, and do it better than Bladite can. You can use your BKT knife and 1 other tool. That is all that is permitted. REPEAT!!!! A BKT KNIFE AND ONE OTHER TOOL!!! I suggest a snow shovel, but if you make your too, you get extra credit. Record the temps inside the shelter, and out, though.

Must be 18yrs old, you are responsible for yourself, no one else is responsible for your actions, so, if you can't buy it, don't break it.

Contest runs until Feburary 1, 2012 at midnight.

Must post at least 6 picture, no more than 10, or a video no longer than 8 mins.

Show your work, and show your Beckers.

This contest is open to everyone, which means Germany, Norway, Sweden, Canada, and Maine. Anyone, from anywhere can enter.

To enter, post "I, <your name here>, Accept Ethan's Challenge" in this thread. NO CHATTING!! It will get you DQ'd.

The idea is to have fun, learn, and show off your skills, don't endanger yourself, but it might win you some big points with Da Boss if you spend a night in it. Its not a requirement, but I know Bladite does, so there.

What you gonna win?

Well, first place is a Mystery Prize. Mystery Prize? "WTH is that, Moose?" you ask? Well, it could be a new knife that is coming out soon, or it could be that I just haven't thought it out yet. I'll let you make the call that one.

First Place-Mystery Prize
Second Place- BK5
Third Place-BK11

With, one of my own special rewards, if one of the 3 winners of the contest is not a Beckerhead, they will recieve a number as a prize as well.

Ready to get cold? Brrrrrrrrrrrr....................

I hope so.

Withdrawn - I honestly don't know what I was thinking. Every year same old thing, I'm too damned hot to be around snow, it melts when I get near. Oh, and we had less than half an inch so far this year.

I, Widerstand, Accept Ethan's Challenge

--------------------------------------

Well this was quite the learning experience for me, my first snow shelter, I started driving early in the morning to get up high enough to have good snow but I started to have some issues with my Jeep so I didn't get up as high as I would have liked for better snow but I made do with what I had.

I also learned something about cheap-o snow shovels, they are just that and my $12.99 Lifeline shovel sucks and I am going to get a quality one.

That said it was good enough to get the job done along with my BK77 and make something suitable for sleeping in.

Will start tonight now that I have snow!

Well that snow lasted about eight hours till it all melted. And now its 50degrees! Here is a picture of what i started with. I cut that cut the bk7 and the plan was to build up snow around it using only my mess kit. Oh well, Good luck guys.

I GingivitisKahn accept Ethan's challenge.

This isn't exactly what Moose had in mind but I found it somewhat necessary today so here's my entry. Was out hunting again this morning from about an hour before dawn until... well a bit ago. It was about 25 degrees this morning and wet - very wet. We had sleet and freezing rain mixed with snow off and on last night and this morning . Around 9.30am I noticed I was getting very cold in spite of the mountain of wool I typically wear. Hadn't started shivering yet, but that was around the corner.

Accordingly, I decided to shelter out of the wind in the lee of this fallen tree. That structure in the middle of the picture is the frame of the bush chair I've used in the past - didn't bring the wool blanket today but I kind of wished I had ...

Getting out of the wind made a big difference but I decided to make a little fire as well. Used my BK9 to build a small platform to keep the fire out of the snow ...
20120121_ac_0005.jpg

Gathered some fuel. We have some sort of oak tree (post oak? pin oak? not sure, to be honest) that grows straight and tall but nevertheless has loads of dead branches within arms reach. This little stack of those branches lasted me about an hour and a half ...
20120121_ac_0006.jpg

Here's my tools for the day - my BK9 and my fire kit. All I used from the kit was some dryer lint and my ferro rod (had a couple of lighters on me but meh) ...

Got the tiny blaze going ...

... and there she goes ...

Took care of the extremities (stop looking at my silly hat - have you never seen a man with a rabbit on his head?) ...
20120121_ac_0017.jpg

... and my other extremities ...
20120121_ac_0017a.jpg

After getting all warm and happy and good smelling - wet wool smells weird but wet wool bathed in oak smoke smells pretty good - I killed the remains of the fire and hunted a bit longer in comfort ...
20120121_ac_0019.jpg

So, I was reminded today of the difference between starting a twig fire for practice and starting one because you really need the warmth. If you haven't done that for a while, you ought to - the stress level makes things interesting. It wasn't until after I had a feeble flame going that I realized I had forgotten to do feather sticks and so forth. I put that down to cold and my rush to get warm.

What this shelter - and it was a shelter - lacks in complexity and actual construction, I think it somewhat makes up for with the need that drove me to seek it. I wasn't nearly hypothermic yet and could have easily called the day early in order to get back to a warm car. The point was, I didn't have to do that and this quick shelter (I had flames roughly 10 min after I decided to seek shelter) extended my time in the woods without sacrificing safety. It wasn't a Nanook of the North shelter but rather more of a Simon Kenton kind of thing.

Good job all. Guess I'll just sit back and watch. I'm in Texas. The closest thing I have seen for snow this year is in my freezer.

Done and Done.

Who would have thought, of a winter without snow.
