Well, June is upon us, the summer is here. Its hot (here at least :D), and it time for the outdoors to kick it up a notch. Here we go.

With all the activities, fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, bushcrafting, soldiering, and whatnot, things happen. When they do, you need either A) have a medic patch you up or B) do it yourself.

This is the June Challenge, Construct 3 First Aid Kits (FAK), a "Truck Kit", "Pack Kit", and a "Pocket Kit".

Truck Kit- designed as an inclusive kit to cover all your needs, designed to be carried in a vehicle of some sort. This is to represent a kit too large for normal carry methods, our Large Kit, if you will. Designed as a sustained medical bag for long term care.

Pack Kit- designed as an inclusive kit to cover all your needs, designed to be carried in your backpack. Comprehensive for field treatment of injuries when you are in an isolated enviornment.

Pocket Kit- desgned as an inclusive kit to cover all your needs, designed to be carried in a pocket on your person, daily. Comprehensive treatment of daily injuries, johnny on the spot with small cuts, abrasions, and other minor medical needs.

Now, the particulars. Don't go out and buy a S.T.O.M.P pack and take pics, this needs to be designed BY YOU. It should fit your area, your body, and your thoughts on what YOU will need. Make them yours. Spend as much on supplies as you wish, but nothing says YOURS, like stuff from home. Build it how you wish.

The idea here, is that everyone that participates, thinks about FA, and how it will be used. If you don't know how to use a suture kit, why have it? Also, everyone that participates, has a chance to win a knife, but will have 3 badass FAK's at their disposal now, as well.

You can ONLY post 2 pics, one all packed up, ready to go, next to a $1 bill, for size, and one pic of an exploded view, with all the components laid out. You must explain what each item is, why you chose it, and how you will use it. REPEAT: 2 pics per kit, for a total of 6 pics per post. A BKT product must be present in each photo, I don't care how or where it is, but it has to be in the pic.

You can post 1 video per kit, no longer than 8 minutes.

You must be 18. You must be legally able to own a knife. You are responsible for yourself and property. Neither Kabar, BKT, Ethan Becker, BFC, or anyone else is responsible for you or what you do.

You have until June 30th at midnight to have your entries in. You may change or adjust your entries as many times as you wish, until Midnight, June 30th.

On another note, be original, be creative. FAK are not just store bought, universal. Everyday household items make some of the best kits out there, and the work much better, honestly.

Open Contest, anyone can enter. Post "I accept the Challenge", make your acceptance post your entry, NO CHATTING. You will be disqualified.

What will you be playing for?

1st place- BK3
2nd place- BK2
3rd place- BK11

Honorable mentions, get a BK13 Remora

Let the games begin. Have fun, good luck, and be safe :D

Beckerhead #127 accepts the Challenge

Well I am sure mine won't be as nice as many of the ones posted. I'm cheap and don't buy special packs for this stuff, I tend to try and use something already around the house.

Backpack FAK
I keep this in a plastic case that held some bath stuff my wife bought. It's tretty thick plastic and plenty durable. I throw it in the backpack when we go hiking or camping.

contents
1 large bandage 5x3 i believe, for a large wound.
2 x packs of extra strength tylonol (2 pills each pack), general pain relief
8 x regular bandaids for nicks and cuts.
1 roll surgical tape
1 roll guaze
1 tube anti inch cream for bug bites
1 after bite pen for bug bites
1 roll of rolaids for relief of bad trail food
4 amodium for the squirts
pack of benedryl for alergic reactions and itching
1 bottle of hand sanatizer
1 small box of butterfly bandages for closing deeper cuts
1 tube carmax lip balm, this is my favorite lip balm and I think it works great.
1 tube neosporin
1 lighter for burning anything that needs burned
2 tampons, to pack any major wound can also be used as tinder. Or with a wife and daughter could be used for actual aplication
1 makeup compact. I know this one seems strange, but since it is for when hiking and backpacking I can use it as a signal mirror, and the makup in it can be used as a bleed quick stop if you mix it with some water. I cut off a skin tag that didn't want to stop bleeeding, I mixed up some of the makeup and gunked it on and it helped stop it.

Pocket FAK

I keep it in a small ziplocked bag

I accept the Challenge

I think this is a great contest since most people do not spend enough time on FAK's compared to fire, and shelter kits...etc.

I guess first I should explain some of my philosophy behind my FAK's. I always have my pocket kit on me and its really just a first step to get me to my pack kit which is really never that far from me and if it will be the FAK will come out of pack into a cargo pocket, if something happens to me or if something is need beyond my pocket or pack kits they should be able to get me back to the Jeep where I have everything I would need for my comfort levels of first aid. So by the time I am back to the Jeep I would have access to all three kits then.

Pocket Kit: With my pocket kit I am able to take care a of a lot of small cuts and foot care with just two easy to carry items.

5812487115_b703d6a766_b.jpg

1. Duct Tape
2. Clean Bandana

Pack Kit: The idea behind my pack kit is that I do more hiking outdoors then anything else outdoors for the most part so its really geared for small cuts, foot care, pain, and bugs.

5812490663_5670caf723_b.jpg

1. Gauze
2. Q-Tips
3. Afterbite
4. Chap Stick
5. Back and Body pain pills
6. Sani Cloth
7. Alcohol Pads
8. Tick Key
9. Band Aids
10. Mole Skin
11. Adhesive Pad

Truck Kit: I know these are in two bags but I count it as one kit. The reason for the two bags is that by splitting it up I can slid all of it under both my two front seats.

Pocket Kit

PocketFAK1.jpg

PocketFAK2.jpg

Coghlan's waterproof bag
A dozen assorted band-aids
5 gauze pads
buterfly sutures
roll of army surplus camo gauze
alcohol wipes
super glue
ibuprofen
benadryl
water purification tabs
firesteel and tinder straws for good measure

This kit contains the basics for minor injuries, but can be useful for larger wounds by utilizing the gauze pads and roll along with my EDC bandana. The pouch is a bit large for pocket carry in jeans, but will fit nicely in a cargo pocket.

Pack Kit

PackFAK1.jpg

PackFAK2.jpg

5.11 10x6 molle pouch
Quik clot
2 large gauze pads
6 small gauze pads
4 camo gauze rolls
triangle bandage
pair of gloves
roll of athletic tape
moleskin padding
cold pack
butterfly sutures
multitude of assorted band-aids
emergency blanket
popsicle stick
2 surgical blades
super glue
small roll of tape
hemostats
neosporin
ibuprofen
benadryl
imodium
snake bite kit
Johnson and Johnson First Aid book

Prior to this challenge, this was my large first aid kit, and remains the most comprehensive as I opted to have the most capabilities in my pack. It contains lots of options for minor injuries as well as plenty of bulky dressing if needed. It contains the widest range of medications of the three kits and a few extras, such as the moleskin and snakebite kit, that make more sense in a pack than in a truck. This kit started as one of those Johnson and Johnson kits from Wal-Mart that we recieved as a wedding gift. I took the contents out of the plastic box and have been gradually supplementing the original kit with extra items. It occured to me during this challenge that the black MOLLE pouch I was using didn't look much like a first aid kit. To help someone unfamiliar with my pack identify the first aid kit, I went to work with some red paracord. I added a red cobra stitch cross and replaced the black zipper pulls with red.

Truck Kit

TruckFAK1.jpg

TruckFAK2.jpg

Army surplus mechanic bag
quik clot
cotton bandages
more camo gauze rolls
triangle bandages
small gauze pads
butterfly sutures
nitrile gloves
roll of athletic tape
super glue
tweezers
box of band-aids
ibuprofen
benadryl
91% isopropyl alcohol
bottle of saline solution for wound irrigation
Victorinox Sentinel

This kit is designed as more of a trauma kit, focusing mostly on treatment of bleeding and less on minor discomforts. My backpack also rides in my truck, and therefore also my pack kit, so I did not replicate many of the smaller items avialable from my pack kit. The truck kit is set up mainly for the scenarios of rolling up on an accident and needing to quickly control serious bleeding or to provide additional or fresh bandges when returning to the truck after initial treatment with the pack kit. This kit is still fairly small and simple as any more specialized gear would be beyond my skill level. This bag also recieved some red paracord additions to help identify it as a first aid kit. A purpose built rescue knife would fit nicely in this kit, but I don't have one at this time. I did have a Victorinox Sentinel handy, which due to its fairly rounded tip and one hand opening, should make a decent first aid kit knife.

Post script, This contest really got me to re-evaluate all my first aid kits, My S&R Pack kit, hadn't looked at the first aid kit in that for a couple years, added some things and took out some things. My mountain pack kit, same thing added and took away. I looked at 5 or 6 kits of my own and they all got the once over. I had never carried a pocket first aid kit until now. I noticed a couple of holes /missing items I wish I had more of, eye wash being one and more triple antibiotic ointment the other. I realized I had 1 pack without a first aid kit, I'll have to get on that. I started incorporating honey/sugar packets into my kits this go around. I should put some superglue in there also.

All my kits are based on current deployment status.

Ok, I started off with the "pocket" FAK. My cargo pockets are large, so they can accommodate this pack.

The Next kit is my "pack" FAK:
This FAK is attached to my ruck and is with me anytime I leave my common area. The base is a med pack every Soldier receives before deployment, which I added a few things to. I worked off the assumption I would used one FAK to get to the other so this pack is more combat oriented rather than common illness and injury.

I accept the Challenge

Here's mine:

first the 'truck kit' which serves as a house kit, truck kit, or car camping kit. I'll bring this whenever I'm with a small group of people. It contains pretty much everything to provide for most medical emergencies (for bigger gatherings I often include an oxygen cylinder and AED). The overall philosophy behind these kits is first aid of course, but with a slightly longer term view, emphasizing wound maintenance over time to allow good healing without infection if one were in the field for awhile. Also they are packed with an eye towards medical emergencies as well as trauma; I feel that many kits these days are far too trauma focused and ignore many of the other issues that can arise when out in the wilds.

Truck Kit or my case, JEEP Kit: This kit is geared more for roadside emergencies that I may come across. Basically if I'm on scene before EMS i can start treatment. Luckily in my neck of the woods EMS is everywhere. Usually they are on scene within 10 minutes. This kit evolved or should I say DEvolved over the last 16 years. It used to be larger and held just about everything our ambulance house bag carries. Over time I realized that the majority of things never got used, expired, what not so I downsized. Has what I need to get a head start for the responding ambulance. No meds of any kind.
Packed:
IMG_0287.jpg

*Hazardous material guide book(Yeah old, but still good)
*Binoculars

Few other things that I've used already that need replaced are another padded board splint and kling rolls. Came upon an accident about a month ago and started splinting the ladies fractured wrist before EMS got there. Well thats my stuff. Fits my needs.

This was actually very difficult to separate my FAK supplies from my regular backpacking and everyday equipment. It is all so integrated, it is hard for me to think of them as different categories. I am sure I have left some stuff out, like water purification tablets, which are with my canteen on my belt. Oh well. I had fun handling all of it.
