In the days gone past, centuries ago, it was man versus everything. And everthing had bigger teeth and claws than man. But, man had an advantage that evolution, in all her wisdom, granted us. The ability to think and create.

Our teeth weren't as long and sharp, our claws were thin and blunt, but we had the ability to craft, to make our own set of claws, and teeth, to level the playing field, then, tip it to our advantage. Now, we are going back, taking our advantage and putting it to the test.

I give you,

Ethan's March Challenge, Weapons at the Ready!!

Not to simple of a contest, as easy as it may sound.

You will be making primitive weapons, and testing their effectiveness. You will have to create 3 different weapons, and then show us how effective they are/were.

Of the weapons you will be crafting, you must pick 3 from this list, and show us what you've got.

Spear- old, and timeless, but add some versitility in the mix, and you've got a standard weapon that no one in the woods should be without
Atlatl- we've made them before in a challenge, can you use it?
Bow/Arrows- ha, lets see if the original sniper rifle suits you
Sling- standard issue sidearm of its day, can you master it?
Boomarang- yeah, its a weapon, look it up
Club- no skinny branch is going to do it here, better fire up the brain, and come up with something good
Blowgun- the silent killer
Sua Sponte- create your own weapon, be inventive, and have uses for everything you include in and on your weapon.

No firearms, no gun powder, if you can't make it from wood, stone, leather, and other natural materials, it don't work.

I will allow paracord/sythetic cordage, as you should have some on you all the time. You get to use 1 BKT knife, or the Ritter MK2 Persaverance. Other than that, its just your hands and brain. This is a skills basic challenge, so a knife, some cordage, hands and grey matter is your list of material.

Now, to test the effectiveness of the weapons, I leave that to you. I do recommend that if you are going to attempt to collect game with your weapons, you make sure of the local/state/federal laws regarding said act. I, nor no one else is responsible for you and your actions, by accepting the challenge, you accept the responsiblities of what you do. Simple enough.

I think using something other than wild game would be more applicable, but it is your choice.

Must be 18 to enter, you are responsible for yourself and your actions, if you can't buy it don't break it.

BE CAREFUL!!!!
I can't stress this enough, these are weapons, and yes, they will work, and yes, they can kill. So, be extemely careful.

Feel free to embellish as you see fit, as aways, pretty wins points, and costumes catch the attention. Might want to consider that.

This contest is open to all who wish to accept Ethan's Challenge.

To enter, post "I acceptt Ethan's Challenge" in this thread, and edit your post to become your entry.

You must have at least 6 photos, no more than 12. Make sure you cover your entry well, choose your pics wisely.
Or, you can have an 8 min video, more or less. It doesn't have to be exactly 8 mins, but it needs to be less than 9 mins. Ethan's badwidth won't allow him to view much longer.

So, that's the Challenge. Might I recommend a shield as well. Its technically not a weapon (tell that to the Spartans) but, if you were to be beset upon by some large meat eating creature, I would want to have a shield.

Contest ends April 1, 2012.

1st Place- Mystery Prize
2nd Place- BK9
3rd Place -Bk11

Have fun, be safe, and WEAPONS AT THE READY!!!!

I accept Ethan's challenge.

The Knife: BK-14 Eskabar

First Weapon: The War Club

This tree looked like it would do.

club1.jpg

I wanted the root crown, so I needed a digging stick. The top of the tree will work.

club2.jpg

I used the digging stick to dig, pry, and break the roots. The Eskabar was batoned through the larger roots.

club3.jpg

After a wash in the pond, trimming off the roots, and some carving, it started to look like a club.

club5.jpg

Weapon Two: Fish Spear

Split the end.

FishSpear2.jpg

Wedged the tines open, and lashed below the split, then sharpened her up.

FishSpear4.jpg

This little guy may only be good for bait, but the spear works.

FishSpear5.jpg

Weapon Three: Sling

Made from 3 pieces of paracord doubled and braided. One more piece used to weave the pouch.

"I acceptt Ethan's Challenge"

This should be fun!

And fun it was.

So here goes. I did not think this project would take me the whole month but it did. I made a few more than three weapons but these are the final ones that proved to be either most practical or most creative. I just used my Bk-2, cordage and some ingenuity for them. I will agree with the others here, being restricted to one knife was challenging, but in a very good way. It stretched me in my confidence and ability with the Bk-2. I hope you enjoy!

1. The Warhammer. This beast just came to be while I was trekking through the woods. I found a longer branch with a “Y” shape at the end and whittled away some grooves for the cordage and also for the stone so that it would fit better. It proved to be rather heavy in my hands but it just felt good. I was the Ajax of the woods with that weapon! No tree dare stand in my way! But for real, this thing could bash skulls.

The beast in all of her glory

Branch before

Branch after a few blows. Thing branch was probably close to four inches thick.
dsc6706d.jpg

Let’s just say this, she is a beast.

2. The throwing stick/club (forgive the lame name, it makes up for it though…) This was originally just supposed to be a club modeled after the Kenyan Masaai war club. After chopping and whittling it down I figured I could kill two birds with one stone and made it a primitive multitool. It is light enough that it’s not too heavy to whail around like a club but at the same time heavy enough to give it some “umph!” The knob at the end was a key attribute that enhanced the “crushing” aspect of it. This may have been my favorite of the three.

The tool

Less cool than I thought it would be…
dsc6795t.jpg

.10 seconds after I clubbed a gallon jug full of water. The thing exploded. It works.
dsc6806d.jpg

The throw, standing some 15ish yards away. I did hit it… one of those times ;) It was pretty comfortable to throw. I added a little notch for my index finger and that worked out well.
dsc6780e.jpg

3. The Vampire Slayer. I believe the weapon explains itself but I just want to do it anyways. I batoned part of the same wood that I used for the stick/club and whittled it into smaller, more manageable pieces. I then put a groove in the longer of the two pieces so that the crossbeam part of the crucifix (yes) fit better into the pole. I used some cord to tie it all up and sharpened the point and called it a day, just waiting for the night to come so I could put this to good use. Sadly the Vampires only glimmer in the day so I had to call off the hunt. So the obvious pros of this weapon are the presence of the cross and the wood, a Vampires bane. Could life GET any better? Not for the dead. Let’s just make ‘em dead-er.

The mother branch. Not sure why the picture is so off. Sowy.
dsc6716.jpg

Making the point even poiny-er.
dsc6822lq.jpg

Jammed it into the aforementioned water jug. Went through quite well and even stuck into the trunk. The point did not break easily at all. It worked out better than I thought!
dsc6828.jpg

The Slayer next to a modern relative. What a pair!

Mr. Becker,

Thank you for making a good tool that can make other good tools. I respect that.

I accept Ethan's challenge though I spell "accept" with only the one "t". :D

Ok, I think these are the first weapons completed for this contest so consider the bar to have been set. Moose called for three weapons, but I made a couple more. Cool contest - kind of like reliving my childhood. Today was perfect - decided to hit one of my hunting grounds to do some trail maintenance (surprisingly little of which was needed in spite of recent nasty storms) and weapon construction.

First up - the frog / fish spear. Had to really choke up on the BK9 to get the fiddly bits to work but that worked out just fine...

Had to include an action shot. Note the sun is to my front so my shadow is falling behind me and not on any unsuspecting fishies....

Next up - the Captain Caveman club. Chopped this out of a fallen tree but didn't pretty it up at all, with the exception of peeling the bark in the handle area. Think the rustic look works...

Goliath Spear!

1 Sam 17:7
And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

Completed spear was ten to twelve feet long and quite large in diameter. I needed a shield bearer though. :(

Damage done. Note each of the preceding weapons are featured killing the heck out of my stump. Also included are my walking stick (don't MAKE me poke you with it) and a sling I built a while back...

After I returned home, I cleaned off the BK9 and sliced up an orange with it. Sharp, sharp sharp! :D I'd show a pic of that too, but I'm at my limit.

Lessons learned:
* BK2 would have been a handier choice for all of these builds because chopping was kept to a minimum. BK9 was fine but a bit twitchy for fine stuff and required more effort for shaping sharp points and so forth. Needed the BK9 though because the Goliath Spear demanded it.

* Having said that, I appreciate the discipline of working with just the one knife. Contests like this one help me become more adept at using the tool I have on me. BK9 is plenty versatile.

* If you make an Apache Star, please be very careful. You sharpen both ends of a pair of sticks and it's safer for you to make them longer rather than shorter. For each stick, you sharpen end 1 and then end 2. While sharping end 2, the stick tends to move around a good bit. I tucked it under my arm tightly as I could to prevent already sharpened end 1 from puncturing my abdomen. Be very aware of what you are doing.

* Goliath Spear would have been slightly more comfortable to make if I had been smart enough to trim the pointy end down *before* removing the grivory. Oh well - process counts.

Thanks for the fun day out and for the chance at some sweet Becker sharps!

I have been under 'light duty' restrictions from my Doctor all month, so I couldn't get to the woods and gather good materials. I had to make due with what I could find around the house. I also couldnt get out and smash stuff, but I wanted to attempt the challenge anyway.

First I wanted to craft a club, it would help me make my other tools for this challenge. i had a red oak 4x4 with a nasty knot in the firewood pile. Most of the work was battoning, with a little shaving, and chopping.
wool008.jpg

wool009.jpg

I had a piece of black walnut that looked like a head smashing-zombie hammer, and a piece of beech for a handle. ( Again, I had no long wood, for a bow, or a spear)

013-4.jpg

I will admit to cheating here...My BK-7 was too large to drill/ carve the whole hole. I backed it up with a Mora carving knife. (It still took over an hour to bore the hole)

014-4.jpg

Trimmed it to fit with the BK-7, and the club.

016-5.jpg

I figured if the primitive guys had access to becker knives they would have been home free. What knife would a caveman use????? A BK-2 of course! This isnt from the "approved weapon" list, but I had a piece of wood that would work, so I made it happen with the supplys I had available.

006-2.jpg

Here is my trio of marginal weapons. I still had fun with the challenge, The club took me less than an hour. The war hammer took over 2 hours. The BK-2 took me over 4 hours!

017-1.jpg

Good luck to everyone else, and thanks again for the challenge.

I accept Ethan's challenge. Sounds fun.

No one knows where they came from or how they got here.
The last reports on the news speculated that we may be under an alien attack.
All I know is they hit us in broad daylight with all they had.
They must have known that we would be dug in like ticks because they hit us with fire bombs to get us out of the house.
We held out as long as we could but in the end the heat was too much.
The wife and kid went first while I watched their back.
IMG_0117.jpg
[/IMG]
After I made sure they were safe I had time to grab one weapon.
I had to make sure it was the deadliest weapon in my arsenal.
Something that I know will change the tide of the battle.
That’s right…….
IMG_0107.jpg
[/IMG]
The BK-13!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I made it out of the house just in time.
The aliens were hot on my tail as I made my way to regroup with the family.
IMG_0124.jpg
[/IMG]
Luckily for us they didn’t give too much of a chase.
They were too focused on putting the flames out.
Apparently they must have thought that our house would be a good base of operations for the invasion.
Little did they know that we had not gone very far and were already planning our counter-attack.
First, we needed some weapons.
With the aliens guarding our main supply we had to use the BK-13 and the ten feet of paracord wrap to make something we can use to show these SOB’s you don’t mess with earth.
We had to be quick before they got too familiar with the layout of the house.
I used the BK-13 to baton through my selected trees.
IMG_0101.jpg
[/IMG]
Since the BK-13 is more of a “kill everything in its path” sort of knife, I had to chip away at one side till I
got about halfway and then flip the branch over and smash it with a rock to break it.
IMG_0104.jpg
[/IMG]
We each chose a weapon that suits our personality.
The little guy chose an age appropriate slaughter stick.
The wife chose to be quick and nimble and make a spear out of the BK-13.
I chose to make a giant hammer out of a Y shaped branch and a big wedge of granite to smash the piss out of them.
IMG_0103.jpg
[/IMG]
We struck hard and fast.
They were not expecting an attack this soon and we caught them with their pants down.
It was a massacre.
Z-man struck first with his age appropriate slaughter stick demolishing their first wave.
IMG_0152.jpg
[/IMG]
I followed with a furious attack that covered the battlefield in blood and guts.
The soft exoskeleton of the aliens was no match for an 8 pound wedge of solid granite.
IMG_0162.jpg
[/IMG]
They were running scared and tried to make a hasty retreat but the quick maneuvering and lightning
fast speed of the BK-13 spear let none escape.
IMG_0184.jpg
[/IMG]
The battle ended almost as soon as it began.
The few remaining aliens were rounded up and secured using the cord off of my hammer.
I didn’t want to sacrifice our strongest weapon but when you only have ten feet of cord you have to compromise.
This is where the team cohesion fell apart and we all disagreed on what to do with the survivors.
It was a traumatizing experience and I think each of us dealt with it differently.
The wife decided to make a tasty caprese salad out of them while their tied up friends watched.
IMG_0190.jpg
[/IMG]
I decided to make a necklace out of their skulls and drink their blood.
I hoped my primitive savagery would serve as a warning to others.
IMG_0204.jpg
[/IMG]
And as far as I know, the little guy is still on the battlefield pounding the carcasses in to the dirt yelling “It makes the green grass grow!!!!!” (I think he took it the worst)
We were lucky this time. They underestimated the fury and ingenuity of the human race. Something tells me they won’t make that mistake again. If there is any knowledge I can pass on from our experience it would be this:
1. A good plan and teamwork is better than superior weaponry.
2. Never underestimate the power of a big a$& rock and a strong stick. There’s a reason they were the first weapons.
3. If you only have a little bit of paracord, get good at tying knots. “Tie a knot or tie a lot” does not apply if you have limited cordage.
4. Toddlers love smashing things that splatter. So do wives. As a matter of fact, so do I.
5. Nobody kicks a$& like the human race.

Watch your back my friends.
