Hey yall, I'm an amateur knifemaker, (stock removal mostly) and I was wonder is etsy is a good place to get quality damascus billets?

Thank You, Best Regards,

It would be hard to say. etsy is not a place it is a place full of places. Some may be good and others not so good.

Most folks either deal with a damascus seller they know and trust or deal with one of the better knife providers. USA Knifemakers is a good source.

If you want a moderately priced piece of Damascus check out Alabama Damascus. Decent for the price.

Usually no
Do a search Pakistan damascus.

Look at a hundred of those blades and you can recgonize the pattern and style.

Then never buy anything that looks like that.
There are hundreds of resllers of that grbage and more new ones every day.

For example on Etsy, the account AussieHuntingKnives - they list as being from Canada
Usually you would not associate Canada and Australia - it's all crap.

I looked on Etsy and I saw nothing good.

Either get ti from reputable retailers like the knife supply houses, Jantz, KnifmakerUSA, Alpha, and so on, or get to learrn the names of makers that sell directly.

Kyle Royer has a youtube video where he destroyed one of those pakistan knives. His issue with them was the blade basically ended at the ricasso and they welded on a stick to hold the handle. He did some tests of the steel and was able to get it to hold an edge, not much strength or toughness though.
It kind of depends on what you want to use it for, or whether you're making a high quality knife or a glove box knife.
