Eugene Shadley Saddlehorn Trapper

Hi Jeff,
Looks like you and I have something in common. I still love traditional folders.
The knifes Eugene and Dan made for you are georgous. Check out Richard Rogers and Bailey Bradshaw's work when you get a chance you may want to order from them too.

Gus,
The whittler is my favorite pattern. I saw your full whittler that Richard Rogers did at the Blade show.
I bought a toothpick from Richard at the show, and also ordered a half whittler from him. He said delivery is about one year.
I also ordered a half whittler from Bailey. He said he was two years behind. I hope it wont bequite that long.

Jeff

Jeff, Thanks for taking the time to post the link. I enjoy looking at knives (even pictures), but those babies are extra nice.
(Might have something to do with the fact that I collect trad. patterns too.)

I only have one of Eugene's knives (a Doctor pattern) and a friend of mine got one last week. What gets me every time is his fit. The backsprings and liners can look like one piece of steel sometimes.

Hi Gus,

You've got quite a collection also. All those Case Whittlers are great. I haven't got into the full three blade pattern yet. When I get all the half whittlers I've got ordered maybe I'll try some of the full ones.

I've got Dan Burke working on a coffin handle jack. I think it is also a great looking pattern.

When I was talking with Eugene this past weekend, he mentioned your name and your friend while saying that he had just shipped that knife. What pattern was it?

I'm amazed every time I pick up this saddlehorn. I swear there is not a flaw to be found. Mine is the large pattern that is 4 5/8 closed. The only bad thing is, Eugene says he doesn't like to make knives this big and may not build anymore. I'm glad I got mine.

Jeff

Congrats, Jeff.

The saddlehorn pattern is one of my favorites.

I have a custom by Wally Watts in that pattern with smooth red bone and ats-34 blades as well as a Case large saddlehorn trapper offered as the NKCA knife last year.

I still love traditional patterns and thankfully there are still several good makers out there producing them.

Hi Jeff,

My friend also got a Doctor's pattern. I agree with you; his work is flawless in my eyes.

Blues,

Tell me about your Wally Watts knife. I'd like to know how good the fit and finish is.

I'm thinking about ordering another pattern from Wally.

Jeff

Jeff,

I have the small version with blades about 2.5 inches long. Fit and finish is excellent as is the walk and talk.

Price is also quite reasonable. I paid about $250 for mine a year or so back. It has some file work on the brass liners.

Blade steel is ATS-34 heat treated by Wally.

For the money it's a very nice knife.

There are several other makers like Solomon, Crenshaw etc. who make nice slipjoints as well.

I have a very poor picture of the Watts piece on my pix website toward the bottom. It's not a good pic, but it's all I have at the moment.

Got to agree with Blues. I have followed Wally for years and got to take a peek at Blue's knife last year at the show. I feel that Wally is making one of the best slipjoints for the buck.

Granted they are not Shadley, Bose, Davis, Chamblin, Rogers, Burke, Bradshaw (there are more to add in, these are just the ones I have seen) as far as that extreme level of fit, but they are very nice and very much worth the prices that Wally charges.

I talked with Wally Watts today, and he said he could make my half whittler. My goal is to get at least one from most of the best makers, and then try a new pattern. Wally may not be at the level of Shadley, Bose, and the others, but I believe his knife will make a great addition to my collection. I now have quite a few on order that are from 4 months to three years delivery.

Blues, you mentioned two names that I am not familiar with: Solomon and Crenshaw. Can you elaborate? I am alway interested in good slip joint makers, because there aren't many.

Jeff

Jeff,

Mostly just have seen their work in Blade and other magazines and online.

Check Marvin Solomon and Al Crenshaw. There are others who don't come immediately to mind.

I know Crenshaw had an ad in the most recent or next to last issue of Blade for a large Bullet style trapper for about $225 or so.
Very nice looking piece. He's in Oklahoma.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks, Darrell. Although I mostly collect slip joint folders, I did get to look at your Apogee Illusion at the Blade Show. I hope to get one when I recover from all that I have on order.
