It was hiding pretty good though...
I was working on the back spacer and spring for a miniature folder the other night, and dropped it. I distinctly heard it ping off something metallic underneath my workbench. I took a quick look for it, but it was getting late, so I just retired for the night. I finally came back the other night to look for it, and started digging out all the stuff I have stashed under the bench.

I didn't realize how much crap I let build up on my floor until I had to go through it all with a small whisk broom and kitchen strainer! Piles of wood shavings and metal filings, straw, and dust all had to be gone through. After 2 1/2 hours, I finally decided to check a big metal can where I keep a bunch of micellaneous materials. I dumped it all out on the back porch where I had better sunlight, and finally found it! I'm sure any of you who make miniatures can relate to my predicament. Funny thing is, this can is nowhere near where I was sure I heard the thing land. Oh well, lesson learned, for about the millionth time. Before getting back to work, I cleaned up the area properly!

Been there, lost a spacer for a sword in my carpet 3/32 x 1/8" oval- never found it.
What I wound up doing was a old jewelers trick I've seen posted elsewhere - take your shop apron and hang the bottom of it over a wire that has been mounted along the underside of your table top between 2 screws - you'll look like you're tucking a table cloth into your shirt collar. This should help save many parts from getting lost on the floor.

I have a 1" miniature bowie blade somewhere??
it's all heat treated with a hollow grind, diff h/t with a nice hamon
some where?? but I can't find it.. it was on my bench with my stabilizer
and I think it vibrated off from it somewhere..I think I had more time in it than a reg size bowie :grumpy:

I have never had much luck with anything falling straight down with-in sight,
I feel for you :D

Try dropping it in my shop sometime Possum. I'm convinced that somewhere in there the gateway to the 11th circle of hell is hidden. Everytime something drops on the floor.....IT"S GONE !

Isnt it weird how the small things always end up in the worst places? Screws always fall into cracks, springs always fly into holes, keys always blend in with the rest of the grass etc. The worst trouble I ever got in was when I took off my wedding band in the shop because I was using some pretty harsh chemicals without gloves  (dont what those chems to get trapped under your band) and knocked it off the bench while I was working. I looked every where for that darn thing, dreading that I would have to tell my wife that I lost it but after two hours of looking I decided to give up but not before I had an awesome idea  . I took a peice of 3/16" brass rod and bent it into a ring, polished it and stuck it on my finger and learned a valuable lesson........that lesson being that women can identify real gold from a mile away. :( I was busted before I even made it into the house. But on the plus side she thought it was sweet how I tried to "fix" the problem :D I did finally find it under the drill press mixed in with the wood, steel and brass shavings but the drill is on the other side of the shop from where I was working.
