Hi all. First time here.

I recently acquired what looks to be a vintage European (German) forest hatchet/axe. After scouring the internet, I have been unable to link the makers mark to the maker and am looking for help. The head is about 2 lbs and the existing handle is 15". Seems heavy for a handle that length, but it is early days. Helke traditional axes with a head of this weight have longer axe-length handles rather than hatchet-length handles.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Heavy head + short handle = House Axe

It is gonna be a long shot. I do not even know if they made axes

Perhaps not such a long shot. I followed up as far as I could, but there was little to go on. My speculation follows.

This hatchet has characteristics of German military hatchets, if not identical to the ones I have seen posted elsewhere. Wondering if during the period of increasing militarization in the 30's and 40's forging companies would have been enlisted to make military equipment and EWS might have added/changed their mark just for military items. So far it has been difficult to find direct or indirect references to the history, much less for the maker's mark.

Thanks for your input.
