European sharpening stones in general and the Belgian coticule in particular

Thank you very much, their first two should be required reading for anyone on the MT&E. Looking forward to more.

Henk En Ge Bos conduct very sound research. Well above anything we have written on our Arkansas stones and their history. I recall HeavyHands or someone posting a similar article by them a few years back which was very well researched. They work hard in putting forth accurate research. Well worth reading. I'm very impressed. Thank you J D. DM

Like the others said, many thanks for that.Japanese water stones never have interested me but the Belgian coticules have been on my wish list since discovering them on the straight razor forums whilst searching for info on my Norton Pike lily white washita.I like reading about stones from around the world and thats the best info I've seen.

I use coti's on my straight razor. give a very nice edge and work on knives, chisels, etc just as well. I wanted to try even a bit more so I tried one of the newly discovered apache strata naturals from Arizona and man what a difference now a shave with a straight and no aftershave burn whatasoever, tried it on my kershaws as well and it left them super sharp. check out natural hones. I was skeptical at first now I own 4 of them. they are very fine and fast cutters. after the coti about 10 strokes each side and it is polished to a mirror like finish.

Thanks JD.

I didn't hesitate in bookmarking & saving these, as with the first two you'd given us a heads-up about, some time back.

Thanks again. :)

Some years back I was gifted a Belgium yellow coticule stone from HeavyH and I've been using it ever since. It puts a great edge on my straight razor (high carbon, F. Bannister), plus some stropping.
Like kn4 I experience no chafing. Sharpening my razor is the only time I get OCD about sharpening. DM

david, have you tried the apache yet? it leaves an even better edge than the coti.

Just thought I'd give this a bump in case any of you guys who knew Henk were unaware. He passed away last month. His daughter posted and said she may attempt to finish and post further PDFs that he had been working on.
