Well, after the better part of three weeks wandering around Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, I've come to report that you can find a nice knife or two out there. Here's a sample of my haul:
First a small pen knife from Czech maker Mikov (At least that's what I think it says). The scales appear to be brass, they have a nice pattern to them, and the blades are in decent shape. For less than $10 it's okay, but it needs a good bath in oils and a cleaning. The mainspring is carbon steel and starting to rust, the blades are stainless.
Next here's this interesting little "grooming" knife by German maker Hartkopf. I've never seen this pattern before, and you have to love the efficiency that has a bottle opener added to this little folder. All stainless, very sharp.
This Herbertz slipjoint was a great deal; new, old stock; they don't make slipjoints any more. The guy who had it marked it as abalone, but it's black MOP. Stainless bolsters and brass liners andspacers, I couldn't pass it up. If he had any more I'd have taken them too.
I had a good time looking around a fair number of cities, but the biggest problem is that the best times for me were often when the shops were closed. There were a lot of places that had stuff in the windows I just couldn't get back to.
