My son Evan (15 years old) and I attended a forging class in April. Well, he finished off the knife with some help from dad. He's the better forger of the two of us.

Hope you like it:

1018 for the fittings, aged in just about everything.
The antler is red deer from New Zealand (thanks Colin).

Wow! Now that is a real great first knife!
It amazes me how there are so many young makers showing up now, and they seem all very talented I wonder what the standards for knifemaking will be in a few decades.

Nice to see a father and son working on something together. You don't know how many times I have regretted as a son and then as a father not taking the time to do something like that. BTW, good looking knife and hope to see others....

Pat that boy on the back... That's terrific Steve. Wish I had started that young. Keep em' coming Evan, way to go.

Congradulations:
knives and family have been together since the beginning of time. Keep him encouraged and he will will do well, the two of you can share the best of times, going where ever you wish to visit in the world of knvies.

Very, very nice. I can see he has a style all his own. Love that forged/hand-rubbed look.

Great job Evan, looks like ol' Dad might be in trouble. Now you'll just need to determine if you can work together in the same shop or if Evan will need his own. :D

That is really nice work! I like it a lot; photo is going in my favorites folder.
Keep'em coming.
Regards,
Greg

damn fine job!!! What grit did you take the blade to on the bevel area? Nice aging :D

Guys, that is cool! Evan you did a fantastic job, keep pounding steel! Steve I know how much pride you have in what your son has done, and it's great that you two are doing stuff together. My son made a knife for his girlfriend and last night started talking about making one for himself... I think he's hooked! :D I couldn't be happier and I know you're pleased as punch too. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to lots more.

Very cool, looks like a new knifemaker on the block. I sure do wish my first looked that good, heck I wish my last few looked that good!

thanks for all the comments on my knive guys. Evan

J. Nelson, i think that me and my dad may need two different shops.

blgoode, we used x65 grit with a gator belt.

Evan ans Steve,
The knife looks great! I hope to post a few pics of knives I've done soon...if I can work out how to do it. If anyone else would like a bit of kiwi antler or native wood, let me know and I'll send it.

Keep up the great work Evan

Colin Nicol
