So I got a second thermal coupler that gets inserted through the door leaving a1/8in gap and it was reading about 25deg spike ever time I open the door but the kiln only reads a 7deg spike and stabilized with in 2deg up and down.So I was wandering which to trust my kiln or the thermal coupler ? I am using a lb18 with tap controller with solid state relay my blades are coming out at the right Rockwell and my grain is good to.I was wandering if my pid setting are off here are my pid setting kp.25 ki.05 kd.25 period 4. thanks!

How close to the door is the second thermal coupler? The Evenheat's is top centered. I wonder if the 2nd thermal coupler is just "seeing" heat escaping the opening more than the Evenheat's.

It is about a inch away from the kilns themal coupler. One thing I did notice that the thermal coupler is very sensitive I can insert it in the oven in within a minute it is at temperature.

Not sure about what type of thermocouple using for the secondary, but I believe the Evenheat kiln is shielded in ceramic. I believe the idea here is to keep a more stable temp over tiem so the kiln controller doesn't freak out with things like door opening. I imagine both are correct. You are likely seeing a more "air" related fast readout from the one you added and the supplied Evenheat model is reading the temp of the ceramic coating. Make sense?

I am pretty sure that my even heats thermal couplers tip is exposed. I'm wandering if i should change the thermal coupler to a smaller gauge to catch temp spicks.

I have a spare 8 gauge thermal coupler that does not have a sheath. do think that would be better option?

I would give tech support at Evenheat a call before doing anything to the unit. They are very helpful and easy to deal with.

So I gave them a call a while back and talked to Jim but we never got any where. one thing i did notice when ramping up the second thermal coupler saw the 25deg spike but as soon as the oven read 1475 the temperature the kiln wood settle at1475.
